1.
manu86's being
tominated by yours truly. I sent her 'End of the World News' last night and she loved it. Yay! :) My friend Lucy has also been a victim receiver of a couple of song files. Will ask her what she thought of them as soon as I talk to the lass again.
2. I've been listening to The Decemberists' new album, and damn, it's GOOD. Incredibly good. I adore the circus-y feel of their songs. It's funny, because the songs are sad and the lyrics are haunting, so not really what circus is about. But there's this old school circus vibe going on there on every song. And it always makes me think about The Beatles' "Being for the Benefit of Mr. Kite", which I adore.
(I have a request - any of you Decemberists lovers - is there anywhere we can find lyrics to their songs? I haven't been able to find them in the usual places.)
3. Speaking of Beatles.
writteninstars? I've listened to Apples in Stereo. :-) Picked some random songs based solely in their names and downloaded. It's good. Not amazingly good though. Just as my friend had told me, they do sound like the Beatles. I really liked one song called "Strawberry Fire", that of course, has the same feel to it as "Strawberry Fields Forever" - my favorite Beatles song ever. I also liked "The Bird That You Can't See", which is sooo a play on the lyrics to "And Your Bird Can Sing"! The other songs I've listened to didn't strike me as worth the rec. So there you go! :-)
4. Only 10 more days to the White Stripes concert! WEEEE!
5. Whenever I have these bouts of falling in love with great new music, I get depressed about living here. Because unless the artists are a huge international sucess, their albums won't be released around here.
See, I love buying records. I love having the CD with the cover and the lyrics and I'm the geek who reads the acknowledgements and thank-yous.
I wish I had enough money to import everything I love, but it's too expensive. And outrageous: Brazilian government taxes imported 'superfluous' - as they call it - an incredibly high 60% tax rate over the tag price. Being that US$1,00 costs about 3 of my bucks, plus shipping and the 60% fee, an imported CD ends up costing about 70-80 of my money. Which is a *lot of* money to put on a CD.
Sometimes, when it's something I love and can't live without (cough*DaveMatthews*cough), I'll go crazy and import. But most of the time, I'm just glad people break the law and share mp3s. :-P
