The first time I heard about ASP's new show was with the news that it'd been canceled. At which point watching it seemed useless.

I rarely drop comedies from my schedule. I think it's in part because I don't invest all that much in them in terms of fannishness (the ones I do get invested in are the aberration, not the norm) and in part because I think 45 minutes can be too long to invest in something that isn't grabbing me, but 22 minutes isn't. I think one of the few I've quit is Scrubs because even in 22 minute chunks it was annoying me.

I really wish I could like Doctor Who, but it's like the antithesis of what I want from a show (meaningful and long-lasting relationships - of any kind), so forcing myself to watch because I got invested in one relationship seems destined to lead to bitterness. Better to just cut the cord, I thought.

I've always had a ton of problems with sitcom/comedies, so the second they start offending/embarrassing me more than I can handle, I'm out the door. Actually, other than Arrested Development, I can't think of any other half-hour show that I've watched in its full run.

Truth is I find Doctor Who kinda hollow -- you know: big ideas, not so complex execution. And while fandom does make it deeper, I'm not interested enough in the show to care about what fandom says about it.

I remember you mentioning a non-fondness for sitcoms before. Let me guess, the other sitcom=The Nanny?)

I find myself caring very little for the show itself. The writing isn't horrible, but nothing special. The plots are often silly and mostly predictable. And the love for the Doctor himself, which did increase when Ten came on the scene, is not even close to being strong enough to keep me watching. When the relationship is all you care about and that relationship ends, well, you can imagine how much allure the show holds for you.

Now I just gotta decide whether to bother with this season due to *casting spoiler*. I think I'll steal your PB approach and wait until they've aired before deciding. (On PB, though, I think I'll probably watch it at least in chunks. Really, bringing her back says to me that they realized how much the show didn't work without her. Which means they've probably wised up. Of course, I never did care about the show or them as much as you did, so I have less to lose by taking the plunge early.)

I don't think I watched all of The Nanny either, because I thought the later seasons were kinda boring. Now that I'm thinking about it, I might have watched all of Mad About You, but I can't be sure, since I did it completely out of order in years of reruns.

When the relationship is all you care about and that relationship ends, well, you can imagine how much allure the show holds for you.

I never got too deep into the Doctor/Rose relationship mostly because I never cared enough about the show overall, but I know what you're saying: that's exactly what happened to me with Prison Break. And SGA as well, though I'm still watching that show for mocking reasons. *g*

It's so nice to see others articulating exactly the reason I haven't fallen for it. Though (pls don't be hating me for this), I'm enjoying it more now that Rose is gone, but as I found Donna 100x more annoying, well. I'll give S4 a try because Ten is v.v. pretty, but no promises about sticking with it beyond Jack Harkness eps.

Oh, don't worry about it. I may like Rose, but I really never cared all that much. It's only when people come at me with the attitude of "Rose sucks and all her fans suck right along with her because don't you know you can't be a true Doctor Who fan if you like Rose?" that I get my dander up. I get way protective of her in those instances (though mostly internally, because I just don't care to get involved in Who fandom, and especially not with the type of fans who have that attitude).
