Meeeeeeeeeme.

Aug 12, 2010 19:06

I did a whole complicated thing here with a random number generator instead of just following the instructions, because I like to make life difficult for myself. But the actual directions for this meme are:

-Write down twenty of your favorite pairings/threesomes/etc.
-Put your media player on shuffle. The number of the song corresponds to the number of the pairing.
-Quote a part of the song that you think has any similarity with the couple. [Although I may wander off into speculating on the song or some part of the song as a fic prompt, if it doesn't otherwise seem to apply.]

Drake/Josh - The National, "Trophy Wives"

no nobody wants to be
no no one's lover
no matter what they say
lovers know they are the ones
who one day have to go

trophy wives
I know they wander
and find a young young man
trophy wives
I know they wander

Clearly this is all about how it is much better to date/marry your stepbrother than any other random person, because while all those other people will probably leave you, your stepbrother will always be there for you. Alternative explanation of the first verse: no one else wants to date Drake or Josh because sooner or later his stepbrother's possessiveness will come between them.

Jack/Sam/Daniel/Teal'c - XTC, "Dear God"

If there's one thing I don't believe in,
It's you... dear God.

I could more or less quote the whole song, but look: I am guessing after the whole Goa'uld experience there are a LOT of atheists in SGC foxholes. Especially everyone who wants to be sharing their foxhole with Teal'c. Ahem.

Miles/Ekaterin - U2, "One"

We hurt each other
Then we do it again

Sounds like a very Miles-and-Ekaterin-esque sensible take on the likelihood of continuing screw-ups and need for forgiveness in their relationship (reset button and all).

Actually the entire song sounds like a slightly Mirror-verse angrier/bitterer/meaner version of various portions of their disastrous courtship in A Civil Campaign but la la la MY Miles and Ekaterin are not like that la la la.

Aral/Cordelia - The Tragically Hip, "Tiger the Lion"

This is tiger the Lion
gimme the Knuckles of Frisco
- if there's danger in the language,
gentlemen,
I suggest no further use of
the two-way radio.
'John Cage had come to feel
that art in our time
was far less important
than our daily lives,
to which so many'd become
more or less inclined.
The purpose of it's not unique.
Not to build masterpieces
for a delectative elite
but simply to wake to your life.'

** Not actually relating to Aral and Cordelia at all, I've been thinking about this song--the 'John cage ... your life' section especially--as sort of encapsulating how I feel about fandom and fanworks. The fact that some fanworks are totally effing brilliant is sort of beside the point; fanwork exists as a way to interact with the media we're deluged with day in and day out, a way to wake to our modern, media-saturated lives.

Also, the CD liner notes for this song include footnotes. The section in single quotes above is paraphrased from Off the Wall - Robert Rauschenberg and the Art World of our Time by Calvin Tomkins, (Doubleday and Company, 1980).**

Ahem. Um. That opening bit about not using the two-way radio is totally reminiscent of the whole Sergyar adventure where they met, isn't it?

The John Cage part mostly just makes me think of Aral listening patiently while Cordelia spouts off with some piece of egalitarian philosophy.

Taura/Roic - The National, "Cherry Tree"

You're sharp all right

But no one is asking so leave it alone
Leave it alone
Can we
No one is asking so leave it alone
Leave it alone
Can we

a) Taura is, in fact, sharp all right.

b) The latter part is evocative, to me, of their discreet-to-secret relationship. There's no need to talk about it with other people, or even very much between them. It is what it is, and it's only for them.

Dag/Fawn - Reel Big Fish (covering A-Ha), "Take on Me"

Ahahaaha oh God what. Um. No, I can do this, I can do this.

So needless to say
I'm odds and ends
But that's me stumbling away
Slowly learning that life is OK
Say after me
It's no better to be safe than sorry

All right! Clearly this is about Dag being in a general state of brokenness when they met, and Fawn not being much better, in fact, and the two of them choosing to risk their relationship despite all the danger and disapproval inherent in it. ♥

Eugenides/Attolia/Eddis/Sophos - Sufjan Stevens, "Seven Swans"

This is me, restraining myself from pasting in THE ENTIRE SONG.

We saw the dragon move down
My father burned into coal
...
I saw a sign in the sky
Seven horns, seven horns, seven horns
I heard a voice in my mind
"I am Lord, I am Lord, I am Lord"

...Half the song is okay, right? Anyway, this is an OT4 which, in its entirety and its sub-pairings, is entirely due to the machinations of the gods. Also, prophecies re: fire and burning and yes. Yes. There you have it.

Ramie/Jack&Jill/Tommy - The Mountain Goats, "Cubs in Five"

They're gonna find intelligent life up there on the Moon
And the Canterbury Tales will shoot up to the top of the best seller list
And stay there for 27 weeks

And the Chicago Cubs will beat every team in the league
And the Tampa Bay Bucs will make it the way to January
And I will love you again
I will love you, like I used to

Yeah. Nothing is ever going to be like it used to.

Neal/Peter/El - Vienna Teng, "Augustine"

Lead me now
I understand
Faith is both the prison and the open hand

It's a relationship with trust issues. /understatement

I keep trying to explicate it more than that and just flailing wordlessly. Faith is both the prison and the open hand. It's just so ... them.

Parker/Hardison/Eliot - The National, "Fashion Coat"

I die fast in this city
Outside I die slow

Where "this city" is shorthand for their mostly-urban criminal lives--constantly high-risk and high-stakes but they wouldn't survive with anything safer. Which sort of describes any relationship between the three of them, too...

Nate/Sophie - Peter Gabriel, "Here Comes the Flood"

You have no home, you have no walls
In the thunder crash
You're a thousand minds, within a flash
Don't be afraid to cry at what you see
The actors gone, there's only you and me

There are a lot of walls and and a lot of masks that have to come down for Nate and Sophie to actually work out. Total catastrophe, greatest love story ever told, or both.

Danny/Lindsay - Lemonheads, "Mrs. Robinson"

Ummmm.

Laugh about it shout about it when you got to choose
Every way you look at it you lose

This kinda reminds me of the turmoil and misery of them struggling over getting back together when Lindsay got pregnant. But then it all worked out fine AND I AM SURE WHEN THE NEXT SEASON STARTS IT WILL ALL BE CONTINUING TO WORK OUT FINE. YEAH. YEAH IT WILL.

Eleven/Amy/Rory - KT Oslin, "Come Next Monday"

Come next Monday,
I'll go to bed early,
I won't talk dirty for a week, or maybe two
I'm goin' on a diet,
Just like sugar, honey,
Come next Monday,
I'm gonna give up on you.

Happily, a more or less infinite amount of time can/will elapse before next Monday and even when they get there it will probably turn out to be next Monday in a completely different universe so they'll keep sticking together anyway. LA LA LA.

Okay, that stuff I said, above, about random number generators and stuff? THIS WAS RANDOM, THIS WAS REALLY TOTALLY RANDOM AND I DID NOT MAKE IT HAPPEN. POSSIBLY THEY REACHED OUT AND MADE IT HAPPEN SOMEHOW.

Cobb/Saito - The National, "Secret Meeting"

I think this place is full of spies
I think they're onto me
Didn't anybody, didn't anybody tell you
Didn't anybody tell you how to gracefully disappear in a room
I know you put in the hours to keep me in sunglasses, I know

And so and now I'm sorry I missed you
I had a secret meeting in the basement of my brain

*GESTURES EMPHATICALLY*

Nine/Jack/Rose - Sufjan Stevens, "Chicago (Multiple Personality Disorder Version)"

I fell in love again
All things go, all things go

That's pretty much this trio in a nutshell--Nine's beloved and sincere rebound, but doomed not to last for long.

The frequently-repeated I made a lot of mistakes possibly also expresses some of Nine's feelings about ... everything.

Also, there are handclaps and synth effects and trumpets and stuff.

Metacrisis!Ten/Rose - Eddie from Ohio, "Sahara"

Sahara will never be the South of France
Obvious with the rising sun
If I had no home
I'd build one in the sand
If I didn't have a love I'd find me one

a) Metacrisis!Ten will never be Actual Ten, no matter how hard he tries, and daily life is going to make that increasingly obvious with every moment

b) Stranded together in another universe with noplace else to call home and no one to love more, they could do far, far worse than each other.

c) This is giving me depressing thinky thoughts about their relationship as the proverbial House Built on Sand - God, it even works as a visual motif with that damn beach.

d) Writing this pairing? Me? What?

Jack/Ianto - The National, "Val Jester"

You should've looked after her better
You should've looked after her more
You should've locked the door

Fill her coat with weapons and help her get it on
'Cause one day when she goes, she's gone

For assorted reasons including female pronouns I have often thought of this as a Ten-and-Donna song, but I can kind of see it as Jack's regrets over Ianto's death, too. I mean, I think in that case it's Jack failing to respect Ianto's own agency in their relationship and their work and his death, but, yeah. I can see Jack thinking he should've looked after that boy better.

Kirk/McCoy - Elton John, "Candle in the Wind"

*giggles uncontrollably*
*ponders Lord King Bad Vid*
*giggles more*

Okay, okay, but actually:

From the young man in the twenty-second row
Who sees you as something more than sexual,
More than just our Marilyn Monroe

Out of context, that actually does strike me as reminiscent of Bones' best-friend view of Jim beneath and beyond his Jim Kirk mystique.

Kirk/Spock - The Dresden Dolls, "Mrs. O"

I was going to try to be vaguely serious about this but then I got wondering whether I met TOS or Reboot when I wrote that, or possibly Reboot!Kirk/Spock Prime, and then...

will you tell about the time they made you go
all alone to the palace where they took your only clothes

...Just sounds so much like every damn episode where Jim gets his shirt torn off. Or the whole fight in "Amok Time", even. So there you go. That is them.

Within us is a little universe.

I don't know what that has to do specifically with River and Rory, but it applies nicely to their OT4 with Amy and Eleven, and, I don't know, the end of this season of Doctor Who in general. And also it is a cool line. I ♥ the Symphony of Science.
