I was just asked--by a patron who prefaced herself by describing her question as "general" and "phrase-y"--"In America, men dominate women? Or is it, women dominate men?"
As her subsequent elaboration on the question made it reasonably obvious that the question was semantic and/or grammatical, I managed to fight down the impulse to a) launch into Feminism 101 or b) say "only if it's safe, sane, and consensual" and ultimately came up with, "Historically, it has been the case..."
