Stargate Fic: Differences

"Children of the Gods," for all its faults, was not actually too hard to write Bechdel test fixits for--there are multiple female characters who are reasonably memorable (by description, at least, even if they don't have names) and they are shown to meet or at least be in the same place at the same time ( Read more... )

Ooh, this is cool.

The captain whose name she didn't know called out something behind her, but Sam was in a hurry to find out what had gone wrong now, and never heard what she said.

That's a great last line - Sam empathizing, but not so much that she'll resist the lure of disaster. And the poor aide stuck as a nameless echo.

Thank you! After writing my first couple of stories, I wanted to do one where two women didn't find any special common ground or connection--because we don't, always, of course. I'm glad this worked for you!

I very much like this. And it finally penetrated Sam's brain that insane might not have been an expression of enthusiasm. = HA!

You know, I've always wondered about that silent captain, but it would never, ever occur to me to use her in a story. I'm glad it occurred to you. I like Sam's realization that that could be her someday, if she loses her joy -- even as her babbling shows us she's in no danger of that anytime soon. But it's still an assumption that, in away, leaves the captain just as anonymous as Sam's running out on her. It's a nice way to underline your point about how few women are given voices on the show.

Thank you! I'm afraid she is far from the last nameless and voiceless woman who'll be showing up in these stories...
