The smallness of it, that is. Everyone's talking about their first fandoms, and their subsequent ones, and here I am on, like, number three. Four, maybe.
My first fandom? The X-Files. I was thirteen. Aside from voracious reading at Gossamer and my brief experience of AOL chats and forums, my fandom consisted of me, my best friend, and maybe two other people at our high school. We were obsessed - counting minutes until the next episode, buying all the merch we could lay hands on... I hosted 'marathon parties' at my house, where we would spend an entire weekend without sleep, watching episodes continuously. Aside from, y'know, breaks to freak out from sugar and caffeine overload. I wrote fic, copiously, which thankfully didn't circulate outside my tiny tiny fandom.
The fandom faded before the show did - by seasons eight and nine, I was feeling karmically responsible for the train wreck, wondering if I'd somehow brought this upon the world by wishing so hard, back in season three, that this show would never end.
Maybe it's that that lets me anticipate tonight's Buffy and think, no, really, I'm sure this is for the best.
buffy,
