The Big Day Out, Gold Coast Parklands
January 20, 2008
Rage Against The Machine, Bjork, Silverchair, Battles, Billy Bragg and much, much more...

I feel utterly rooted this morning. But perhaps not quite as rooted as user Gumbuoy, who wrote around 2,200 words in four hours to complete the bulk of this Big Day Out review. By contrast, I reviewed only three of the bands in slightly less time (Battles, Billy Bragg and Iron On). Immy, Bjork is still to come, but in three words: She was awesome!

Personal list of highlights:
1. The Nightwatchman: This was a totally unexpected find. Amazing sense of passion and inspired the crowd with ridiculous ease and super "political blues". Cover of Dirty Deeds was very memorable.

2. Bjork: OMG so cool. She had an amazing brass band that reminded me of Travis Sullivan's Bjorkestra and the song selections worked so well. At turns spooky and dark or bold, bright and heaps of fun. Hunter was possibly the pick for me as she unravelled a net and trailed it around behind her as she sang, but what struck me was her ability to remix her songs. Hyperballad was probably the most obvious case going from typically "Icelandic" into this massive dance bop-along midway through. Super stuff!

3. Battles: Just go read my review of them. Says everything. Amazing!

4. Govindas curry for lunch. Yay vegetable curry!

5. Operator Please: In a downpour. So much fun, and they are the cute! And violin! Fuck you Operator Please hater with no musical taste.

6. Billy Bragg: I think I might have expired when he began singing Accident Waiting to Happen. His voice is so, so cool. I desperately wanted Levi Stubbs Tears, but not this time, sadly.

7. Midnight Juggernauts: I wasn't taking notes at the time, but the dude sounds so much like Bowie that it's not funny. Very sexy and great tunes. I need to see these guys close-up, rather than from 100 metres away.

South east Queensland has been enjoying unprecedented rainfall over the past few weeks, and the day of the Gold Coast Big Day Out dawned overcast and humid. Luckily it only rained briefly, certainly not enough to dampen anyone’s spirit. While a large number of acts seemed to have political overtones, this year’s Big Day Out had something for everyone, from the angry rock of Rage Against The Machine and Anti-Flag, the charming pop of Operator Please and Kate Nash, and the mod-rock of Faker and Yves Klein Blue.
