Denvar - The Brunswick St Mall Rotunda
Friday September 24, 2004
I find free music difficult to refuse. That's why it was impossible not to wander to the Brunswick St Mall when I heard Denvar were to play an open-air gig under the Rotunda.
I roll up to Ric's a little before 6pm, sitting outside under the trees while they setup about 20 metres away. Before I know it, they're ready - the strumming and tuning has transformed itself into the set.
I'd never explicitly gone to see Denvar play ever before, so I was surprised to realise just how many tunes I recognised.
Alas, I wasn't able to listen as closely as I would have liked - I was chatting to a friend at the same time.
However, for anyone who enjoys laid back acoustic rock, Denvar are very enjoyable. Intricate, gently strummed guitars compete against the occasional plane flying overhead and the constant thrum of street noise that - unfortunately - drowns the vocals a little. It's really hard to hear the lead's voice.
Nevertheless, the drinkers at Rics' and other establishments are appreciative - scattered applause greets the conclusion of each song.
I half suspect Denvar are a bit softer than usual - the drums don't get much of a work out. It's hard to tell when the band is half hidden by a row of bushes though.
It's beyond me why Denvar can play outside without any problems from the authorities -- if they were to go inside Ric's, most likely the State Government's Liquor Licensing division would come down on them like a ton of bricks for 'excessive noise'.
Ludicrous.
Denvar are playing on October 15 at the Zoo with Halfday and Triple J unearthed winners Shifter. I plan to go along.
