In which we musicate ...

It's like rumination, except with music.

1. Total amount of music files on your computer:

Hmmm, this is difficult, since my music is now scattered in three locations because it spans two hard drives. So let me see ... winamp is telling me 3,382 files -- a total of 11 days and 18 hours of music that occupies 24.07 GB of space. Most of that would be legit, ripped from my CD collection as well as a hefty proportion of live bootlegs. Most of it is full albums as well, not simply single tracks.

2. The last CD you bought was:

I bought four CDs just the other day:

a) Kate Miller-Heidke -- Circular Breathing. Up-and-coming local girl with an operatic background, a superb voice and a talent for quirky songs. Recently performed Crowded Houses's classic Woodface in concert to rave reviews.

b) Kills -- No Wow. Truly stunning live. A must see of they ever come to town. This is perhaps not their best release, but it has a smattering of good tracks on it, including Murdermile and No Wow. Rainy would approve.

c) Beasts of Bourbon -- In the Belly of the Beasts. Live recordings of Tex, Spencer P and Brian at their outrageous best back in 1991 and 1992. Highlights include Chase the Dragon and a cool cover of Houndog Taylor's I wanna get Funky. I don't like their version of execution day -- Gentle Ben's is better. When on top form, this band is incredible live.

d) Iron On -- Oh the Romance. Brisbane indie darlings' (there's a bunch of those kicking around right now) debut full-length release. I think I like the EP more, but Kate (more chick vocals ...) has a unique singing rythym that I find quite cool.

3. What is the song you last listened to before reading this message?

Headless Chickens -- Mr Moon. More chick vocals. And a kiwi. Double whammy, really. Not my favourite Chickens track, it's a bit too quirky and overly cute. I prefer Cruise Control or George. Or the bleakness of Gaskrankinstation and Railway Surfing. Juice is great, too, with a riff that sucks you straight in.

4. Write down 5 songs you often listen to or that mean a lot to you:

All of them! Okay, this feels very arbitrary, but let's try this:

Penny Flanagan -- Shine. CrushCrushCrushCrushCrushCrushCrushCrushCrushGorgeousChickVocals.

Clouds -- Say it. In the early-mid 90s Triple J was a constant source of new music for me. Clouds was one of the bands, and this was the first Clouds song I ever heard. It's catchy, brilliant and has a cool solo/breakout. Without a doubt, it singlehandedly changed the style and variety of music I listen to the most.

Trinkets -- Moneygum. We like 3/4 time. Which just proves we're romantics. Yes. Gollum. Precious. Etc.

Sigur Ros -- Milano. After I bought Takk, I listened to it for six weeks without a break. You work out why.

Metallica -- Eye of the Beholder. Funnily, I never took an interest in music until I had almost finished high school. I could pick virtually any track of And Justice for All ... but for some reason I always liked this one best. Without Justice, I never would have got into music.

5. Who are you going to pass this stick to? (4 persons) and why?

Hmmm ... five ... because I can.
