Finally. My yearly tradition almost bit the dust.
But here goes:
1. The Weather Man - American Beauty clone it may be, it's still good and because I couldn't choose which of the next three blockbusters should be number one, The Weather Man wins.
2. Sin City - very overrated, still impressive, very stylish. With so much talent working on and off screen it couldn't have been bad.
3. Batman Begins - Batman rules. This version beats the pants off all other Batman movies.
4. Star Wars Episode III: Revenge of the Sith - Blockbuster of the century so far. Visually dazzling, great connections between the old and new, but poor acting in parts, arguably appropriate or not. Still, I dislike Lucas.
5. Wallace and Gromit: The Curse of the Were-Rabbit - animation for both kids and adults. Very witty, clever, suggestive, subtly dirty: hysterical.
6. Transamerica - Surprisingly good and very watchable considering its subject content. Great acting, good story, intense drama throughout. Best film for the budget in 2005.
7. Jarhead - good film from Mendes, not as good as American Beauty or Road To Perdition. Subtle messages throughout, very little story. Fairly obvious. I hoped for more, still good though.
8. King Kong - biggest disappointment of 2005. Special effects sometimes good, sometimes bad, weak acting, dragged on for far too long, characters not developed as well as I'd like. Not bad, but definitely not what it could have been.
9. Unleashed - great film considering it's a Jet Li movie. Great acting throughout, kickass action. Very fun to watch.
10. Crash - yeah, everybody loves Crash. It was good, but it was just like Magnolia, 13 Conversations About One Thing, 2 Days In The Valley, etc, etc.
Runners up: Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy, The Bad News Bears, Kung Fu Hustle, Melinda and Melinda, The Chronicles of Narnia, and Harry Potter and the whatever the hell it's called.
What a great year for movies. No real incredible standouts, but a large number of pretty damn good ones.
