I saw heart surgery this morning. Talk about impressive stuff. More and more surgery these days is laproscopic and going through tiny incisions, and here I am watching one of the exceptions--cracking open a chest and going on a bypass machine. Crazy. I can't say I even know how to respond to it entirely. I was there with an anesthesiologist, so mostly I was learning about management of anesthesiology, and then some basic background on the anatomy and physiology of this defect (hypoplastic left heart syndrome). It wasn't the HUGE DEAL I expected it to be, and perhaps it was also comforting to actually have met all the doctors previously. But there's definitely a very sobering feeling watching them induce anesthesia--conscious to out in all of a few seconds flat--and then the idea of actually going in and doing a procedure inside somebody's chest. It's very wild.
I'll be spending a nice long time thinking about all this and taking it all in. And going back Thursday morning.
