So I'm going to try and not put any spoilers in here, but inevitably a couple might get in here, so if you haven't seen the movie yet, you may want to steer clear of this post. I think the best way to do this is to make a likes and dislikes list, so that's what I shall do. Overall I thought it was great as far as the HP movies go, one of my favorites when just looking at it as a movie. Now when you look at it through how true it stayed to the book, it was the most disappointing movie so far for me. It ran right at 2 1/2 hours, it could have been at least 3 or 3 1/2 and it could have included a lot more of the important things. So here's the list as I've come up with so far.
Let's start with the good things:
- The new characters (Luna, Umbridge, Bellatrix, and Tonks) were dead on. I was a little surprised by Tonks, but I'll to that later.
- They did a good job of getting Harry's anger and angst across. I thought he was as annoying in the movie as he was in the book.
- I thought Umbridge was good. I didn't hater her quite as much as in the books, but we got to see a lot more of her in the books.
- Luna was perfect, that's exactly how I had her pictured.
- I liked Umbridge's office..it was sufficiently annoying as hell...those damned cats.
- Dude, Tonks is HOT. I had her pictured as kind of a nutcase who was much frumpier. But dude, I want to see a movie of just her. Take a look at Natalia Tena's website to see her other stuff. She's really, really attractive. I was pleasantly surprised with her.
- I thought Kreacher was good, I would have liked to see more of him.
- I loved the interactions between Umbridge and the professors. I especially loved Snape in the movie (yes I know I'm partial to Alan Rickman and Snape, but he was almost funny in this movie...it was the first time we've seen his human side in the movies). The interaction between McGonagall and Trelawney was really great too.
- I liked the DA scenes, I thought those were well done.
- I also loved Grawp. He was really cute and loveable.
- Overall, I liked the feel of this movie, I think they really captured the feeling of the book
******MAJOR SPOILER ALERT - DO NOT READ IF YOU DON'T WANT TO KNOW SOME PLOT********
And now to the longer list of things I didn't like:
- I wanted to see a lot more of the Black house, I mean where was the screaming portrait? I was really looking forward to that.
- Why didn't they mention the fact that Ron and Hermione made prefect? That was a cause of major angst for Harry and it made it more risky when they started the DA.
- Quidditch? Why was there no quidditch? Canceling Quidditch was one of the worst things Umbridge did. I was also really looking forward to seeing Luna's Lion hat.
- This was Fred and George's big scene stealing chance. Half of the book concentrated on them and their antics. Unfortunately they got 5 minutes of the movie, and it wasn't even that great of a 5 minutes. I liked the fireworks, but what about the swamp? And there was no discussion of them quitting school, or starting a joke shop, or having Harry's Triwizard earnings. I was really disappointed by this whole thing, which brings me to my next point.
- Where the heck was Peeves? He had a big part in the fifth book, and it was fairly important too, and he wasn't even mentioned in the movie. I think this was a very poor choice on the part of the producers. This could have been such a good scene.
- I wanted to see the relationship between Cho and Harry discussed a bit more, in the book it was much more interesting and added quite a bit to the story line.
- Probably the biggest disappointment for me was the Ministry of Magic scenes. I was really looking forward to seeing a lot of the things in the book, like the room with all the doors, the brain room, the clock that turned the death eater into a baby and back to an adult again. Also, I was hoping for a much longer fight scene, I mean the Ministry of Magic fights took up a good third of the book, and it got maybe 10 minutes in the movie. I also thought the fight between Dumbledore and Voldemort could have been longer and could have been a better battle. What was there was good, but Voldemort gave up way too easily, and what about the fountain that was supposed to spring to life to help Dumbledore? I really wanted to see that. I was just overall left wanting more from that. I don't think this whole fight sequence was given nearly enough emphasis or attention.
Well that seems to be all that I can think of at this moment...I'm sure more things will come to me, but people should call me or email me or whatever so we can discuss all of this in further detail. Go tonks!
