Episode of the week: 4x04, "Odds"

Next up is one of my favorite episodes: "Odds"!

So, normally there are about 3 to 5 general discussion questions in each ep post, but I happen to find this particular ep really interesting and so there are about a billion questions under the cut. You, um, don't have to answer them ALL. Hee.

1. It's not like Fraser to spend ANY time looking at a woman (or the van she rides off in). Story-wise, it follows that since Ray and Fraser spend more time with each other than they do with anyone else, they get to know each other's expressions/behaviours. I can believe that Ray would notice Fraser looking when he never has before since Ray's known him. Script-wise, I'm not ruling out the missing scene. Also, Ray's pretty possessive of Fraser in the first place. I think he's a little jealous (not necessarily romantically; Ray doesn't really like sharing Fraser, which shows up a whole lot in COTW).

2. Yes. And yes. Yes, Fraser's attracted to her. She's his type, after-all: a long-haired brunette with lots of self-confidence (maybe if Thatcher hadn't gone and cut her hair she'd have had more of a chance. *g*). And, um. Just the audio track of the massage scene should get an R rating. Nobody makes sounds like that unless they're interested. He was suspicious and had her investigated and found out she wasn't to be trusted. If there hadn't been any dirt on her, Fraser might have let himself get closer emotionally. His anger with her at the card game is pretty evident. He's pissed because she used him. Victoria probably had plenty to do with that.

3. I'm a Frannie fan. She's got more guts than a lot of cops, probably. She walked into Fraser's apartment wearing a teddy. That takes chutspah, man. She does her current job well despite her ditzy demeanor, so I think she'd be a fine cop. The perps wouldn't know what hit 'em, like the guy in MOTB.

4. Welsh can't help but like Frannie, whether he likes it or not. She has a way of growing on people. So does Welsh, for that matter. Frannie/Welsh aside, I think that they develop a really nice relationship despite their differences because they really do like each other. *smooshes them*

5. Drunk!Horny!Thatcher. Guh. Apparently being drunk eats both her brain cells and her taste in men, however. wtf with Señor ambassador? (note to Thatcher: Fraser likes massages) Okay, okay, so I'm a not-so-closet Fraser/Thatcher fan, what of it? And anyway, "Nel Blu Dipinto di Blu", aka Volare, is Italian, not Spanish. [/useless trivia]

6. I don't think Ray cheated on Stella, but there must have been times when they weren't together. Ray fell for Stella before Stella fell for Ray (I forget if there's any timeframe on just when, canonically), and who knows, they might have broken up twenty times during their teenage years.

7. The agents were a little much, which is surprising considering that Rob Forsyth also wrote Murder Most Likely. Didn't bother me too much, though, and I loved the group of Feds all gulping their coffee together. The actors probably had a blast doing it, although they might have taken the time to not sound so Canadian. They're FBI, after all, not NCIS.

8. He might have been hurt, but not as utterly angry as he was. In my opinion, Fraser was positively seething, which is why I think he did have the start of actual feelings for her. This time, though, he looked up her file instead of trusting her. Yay, Fraser, he really did learn from the Victoria thing.

9.How much do I love that Fraser did the whole switching hands thing? He wouldn't have done it if he thought he couldn't catch her, but the fact that he did it at all illustrates even more how really, really furious he was. That wasn't the case with Victoria; he wasn't pissed off, he was completely crushed. Yay, Fraser, again, for righteous anger.

10. It's hard to say, which means that if Fraser's bluffing, he's good at it. And he is, really. Better than he realises, probably.

Fraser plays fast and loose with definitions. He lies all the time, except it's always some technicality that makes it really not lying, so he can tell everyone (including himself) that he wasn't. Fraser's basically an honest guy, but he'll prevaricate, bluff, whatever, if he has to, and for basically two reasons: to help or protect someone else, and to cover up his own emotions. Because he covers them up, when they do surface, look out. I wouldn't want to be on the receiving end of Fraser's wrath. That'd be scary.

I hadn't seen this episode in ages until today. Things I liked:

1. New Age-y Christina Quinn music during the fight scenes.
2. French Accent!Fraser. mnrglf.
3. Hand-holding!
4. Frannie and Welsh
5. Fraser: Are you suggesting our situations are similar?
Denny: Both outsiders, one step ahead of everybody else.
6. Blind!Sketch Artist with wood!fetish.
7. Paradise Lost recitation. See #2. Also how Fraser's voice drops half an octave when
he's talking to Denny.
8. Frannie: Um, is the hat really necessary?
Fraser: Absolutely essential.
9. Huey: It's not blue, it's black...and beautiful. Just like me.
10.Fraser in said tux. Also Fraser in said tux and suspenders, minus the jacket.
11.Denny: I thought you said you didn't bluff.
Fraser: I'm learning. (Go Fraser!)
12.IOU on air. Except Fraser ends up giving Ray even more air later on. I want
to see the payback, dammit.

(if multiple copies of this comment show up, I'll delete them. LJ is being a bitch and it's not showing up)

I knew I couldn't be the only one! Can you give me some recs on F/T fics, please? I can't find any anywhere.

*high fives* We are the few, the proud. :) I'm a fan of F/K and F/V (and okay, F/K/V), slashwise, but Fraser/Thatcher pushes all my romance buttons.

I think the best one I've read is Rage: The Thunder Rolls and its sequel.

I like Fort Liard, too, despite some overdiscussion and the fact that it's Northwest Territories, not Territory.

Running for Safety looks good after reading the first couple of paragraphs.

There also seems to be quite a bit of F/T fic here, although I really haven't gone through it, since I just, just found it in a search.

There's some others at DSA I haven't looked at much (although some of what I have are literally badfic, IMO). I have no idea why so much Fraser/Thatcher is terrible. These recs are the best I've found, and they're not bad.

*edits own comment, months later*

That would be CSIS, not NCIS. I suck.
