It was HARD narrowing this down to three. So many great stories have come out of DSSS! So I decided to pick one from each of the last 3 years.
Title: Rogue
Author:
kat_allisonYear: 2004
Pairing: None
Rating: PG
Length: 4,000 words
Why I'm reccing this fic: I see a dark side to Fraser, at times. The handful of writers who also see it write it very, very well, and Kat Allison is one of the best. Post-"Ladies Man", Franklin threatens to reveal that Ray Vecchio isn't who he seems unless all charges against him are dropped. Fraser takes steps to ensure that doesn't happen.

Rogue "Sir." I glanced at the door. "May I speak to him?"
"You want to use moral suasion on him, Constable, be my guest. But it hasn't done much good so far."
I took a breath. "And might I ask that our conversation be private and unobserved?"
Welsh stared at me for a long moment, through narrowed eyes. Then he said, "You'll have to deal with the lawyer. But as far as I'm concerned, see no evil, hear no evil."
Title: Deja Vu All Over Again
Author:
vienna_waitsYear: 2005
Pairing: None
Rating: PG
Length: 16,000 words
Why I'm reccing this fic: This Welsh-POV story has one of the best uses of magical realism I've seen in the fandom. Welsh goes through a rotten day, and at the moment of his death, his dead mother pops up to give him a chance to make things right. It's plotty and delicious, with lots of character insights and a happy ending!
Link to the story:
Deja Vu All Over Again "Now that you mention it, no, today was not a good day." I still couldn't believe I was carrying on a conversation with my dead mother, but hey, maybe if I humored my hallucination, it would go away and leave me alone.
"Well, for one thing, Harding, I think you need to make peace with your father--it is Christmas and all."
"Give it a rest, Ma, Christmas was six weeks ago! You're a little late."
"Oh." Another drag on her cigarette. "It gets harder to follow that kind of stuff when you've been dead for a while."
The thought of having to go and face Dad yet again was excruciating, and a drinking binge would follow today's 'rebirth' like heartburn followed lunch at Eddie's Coney Dogs. I'd rather throw myself under a city bus. "Are you turning this into some kind of sappy 'It's a Wonderful Life' kind of thing? 'Cause if so, I'm not gonna play along. Dad's a selfish man who thinks of nothing but himself, and screw everyone else."
"Oh, really? Like father, like son, huh?" she said nastily, blowing smoke in my face. "I think you need to get a little perspective on things."
And the smoke she blew got thicker and thicker until I couldn't see anything at all.
Title: Cognitive Dissonance
Author:
slidellraYear: 2006
Pairing: Fraser/Kowalski
Rating: NC-17
Length: 3,500 words
Why I'm reccing this fic: This story makes me laugh out loud. Fraser keeps touching Ray up during fire fights, and then denying it. The cases these two are working are nuts, and the finale is hot porny goodness.
Link to the story:
Cognitive Dissonance Even after the big Kiss Rebuff of '97, Fraser didn't stop with the inappropriate touching, and it was making Ray crazy, jumpy and angry and turned on all the time, way worse than usual. He needed a plan. He couldn't out-talk Fraser, even if he was yelling. He couldn't make out with Fraser, damn it. But he figured two could play Fraser's whackjob game, so he'd just paw Fraser right back.
