Character Recs - Benton Fraser

Mar 08, 2009 21:03

So, Fraser. I guess he's okay if you like that sort of thing. *shrug* By which I mean HI I LOVE HIM A LOT. And I'm gonna throw some recs at you for stories that really clearly depict the things I love about him. But first, since Nos said mini-essays are appreciated, I'm gonna ramble for a little bit about a specific thing I love about Fraser.

I love Fraser's sincere interest in people. I love it lots and lots. I love that he knows the names of every homeless person on the block and that he talks to small children like they are human beings. And more then anything I love that it's not a front. There is so much of Fraser that is in some way a performance, but he really does care about people. And even more then that he seems to really like and appreciate people. There's no way he would make such an effort if he didn't. Take a look at The Blue Line where he knew the guy who had all the hockey games on tape and the deaf opera fan with the amazing lip reading skills. It's like, okay so did any of you read the Hugh Dillon interview where they ask him "what do you think people should shut up about?" and he says "I don't think people should shut up." It's like that. Fraser listens because he CARES and he puts himself out there in the community not because he feels like he has to, but because he wants to. In a lot of ways one of the things that makes me saddest when I think about due South is the loss of Fraser's apartment in seasons 3 and 4 because we don't get to see Fraser interacting with the community as much anymore. And well, I worry about him.

So yes, Fraser digs people and I dig Fraser. Now, on to the recs!

Title: Reconstruction
Author:brynnmck
Pairing:Fraser/Vecchio
Rating:R
Length:about 9,500 words
Why I'm reccing this fic: Okay first of all I have to say, when I saw the topic was Fraser recs my first instinct was to just throw up a link to Brynn's webpage and say EVERY STORY SHE HAS WRITTEN WITH FRASER IN IT. Because her Fraser voice is consistently one of the very best in the game. But out of all those gems I could only pick one and it doesn't get much better then Reconstruction. It's a story about how Fraser relates to other people and how he sees himself. It's Fraser being dorky, snippy, weird and a bucket full of pain and issues. It's Fraser being wonderful, smart, brave and so full of love. This story shines with love. The author's love for the characters. The characters' love for each other.

I smiled back. I'd known from the beginning that Ray's estimate had been low, but I hadn't cared--he only had so much leave time, and if we didn't finish now, I could always come back before winter set in. It was a beginning; that was what mattered. "Come on. I'll cook."

"No offense, Benny, but at this point, that's more of a threat than a promise. I'm still having grub flashbacks." Ray shuddered theatrically.

"All right," I replied, "then you should cook."

Ray looked at me for a few seconds, surprised, then snorted with laughter. "Walked right into that one. Man, you'd think I'd have learned by now."

"You'd think," I agreed cheerfully, and set off to retrieve my cooking gear.

Title: I can only
Author: slidellra
Pairing:Fraser/Vecchio femmeslash
Rating: R
Length: 6000 words
Why I'm reccing this fic: This fic owns my heart. It might seem like an odd choice for Fraser rec week since it's a femmeslash AU where both Fraser and Ray Vecchio are women, but the Fraser voice is so incredible and clear that it's like stepping right into Fraser's head. And the inside of Fraser's head is such a unique place to be. The humor and the repression and the incredible self-knowledge and the formality and the poetry and the unexpectedness of Fraser's imagination and all of it is woven beautifully into this story.

"No," Fraser replies, too quickly. "No, I was just woolgathering."

"They do a lot of that in Canada?"

Not in the Northwest Territories, no. Fraser could explain about the sheep industry in Canada, and then Ray would laugh and roll her eyes northward, but she doesn't.

She'd been watching Ray's face, the slight pinch between her eyes as she looked through the windshield at nothing in particular, and thinking about how she'd like to give Ray an orgasm. A gift.

She rubs her forehead, pushing the thoughts away. She hasn't had a great many close friends; sometimes she forgets the distinction between friendship and sexual attraction.

Title: Our Dancing Days
Author: sdwolfpup
Pairing: Fraser/Vecchio
Rating: PG-13
Length: 2,250
Why I'm reccing this fic: This is one of my number one comfort fics and the picture of older Fraser in it warms my heart every time. He's all happy and settled plus maybe a bit older and slower, but he still runs around quoting Plato at litterers and generally being his crazy amazing (crazmazing?) Mountie self. Sometimes I get too caught up in thinking about how Fraser makes me really sad most of the time, because Fraser is a pretty sad guy. But this is an entirely non-tragic, entirely in-character look at Fraser being awesome. It's also a rad showcase for his uniquely Fraser sense of humor, which okay sure I mentioned it in all my recs, but LOVE.
