Title: The Harder They Fall
Author: to be revealed
Pairing: Fraser/Kowalski
Rating: NC-17
Length: 22,500 words
Why I'm reccing this fic:
This story takes what it almost a cliché - Fraser gets hurt while pursuing a suspect - and transforms it into something real. It never gets too sentimental, but stays very true to both characters. And while I can understand Fraser here, I love RayK here, strong and brave and scared and so very himself.
Then, suddenly, Ray caught a glimpse of shredded denim and a purple fedora out of the corner of his eye.
"Frase-" he started to say.
"Ray! Pull over!" Fraser said, cutting him off. Fraser was already leaning partway out the window, trying to track which way Ratzini was headed.
Ray had Ratzini, though. He hit the gas and turned the car into the alley. It was the only place a perp would go-secluded and too narrow for a car to drive all the way down. The perp hadn't met Fraser. Ray grinned at the thought. There was a click as Fraser unbuckled his seatbelt and Ray looked over and saw him straining against the door, hand wrapped around the handle. As soon as Ray stopped, Fraser bolted from the car.
Ray swore as he struggled to jerk the key out of the ignition. He tumbled out onto the sidewalk. Fraser was already far ahead of him, in pursuit of Freddie "the Rat" Ratzini, a scrawny, 5'1'' fugitive wanted on burglary, assault with a deadly weapon, armed robbery, and a grab bag of other charges, none of them nice.
As he chased after Fraser, Ray fumbled for his glasses, trying to see where Ratzini was headed. The sound of a shoe hitting metal pointed him in the right direction. Damn it-Ratzini was going up a fire escape.
"Fraser, don't!" Ray yelled, his voice getting swallowed by the street noise drifting over from the highway. He watched in a daze as Fraser grabbed the railing, swung himself over it, and gave chase. Ray was hypnotized by the clank of Fraser's boots on the metal stairs, the steady, driving rhythm of his footfalls. Fraser followed Ratzini effortlessly, pounding up the stairs and easily closing the distance between them.
