Walking into the living room/kitchen area, Ray saw the open box of chocolate doughnuts on the table. ″Wow. Doughnuts?″ Ray put one in his mouth while he poured himself some coffee. Ben was the one who was always pushing a healthy eating agenda, so he rarely bought doughnuts. Ray took a bite and then asked, ″What’s the occasion?″
″Mr. Spivey at the bakery was having a sale.″
Ray added sugar to his coffee and stirred. ″And?″
″And I thought it would be nice to support a local business.″
Ben was drinking his tea, but not making eye contact. Ray asked again. ″And?″
His partner blushed slightly as he finally shrugged and admitted the truth. ″It’s our two month anniversary. I wanted to mark the occasion.″
Ray chuckled and licked some of the chocolate off his lower lip. ″Two months? And I get doughnuts? Hot dog. Happy anniversary to me.″
Ben took his teasing tone the wrong way. ″You think I’m being silly.″
Ray sobered slightly and then sat down at the table next to Ben. He put his coffee and his doughnut on a paper towel. ″Not at all. I think it’s sweet.″
Ben’s eyes lifted, his face suddenly tense. ″Sweet?″
Ray corrected himself. ″Romantic. I like it.″
Ben relaxed slightly. ″I know we didn’t do anything for the first month.″
″Because it was too soon. We were just testing this whole new thing between us.″
″Maybe I’m being a bit too greedy, Ray, but I like the idea of celebrating our time together at regular intervals.″
″It’s not too greedy to ask for what you want. I think it’s a great idea.″ Ray reached over and took Ben’s hand in his. ″In fact, let’s up the ante and have a date night.″
″Date night?″
″Yeah, just the two of us.″
″We eat together every night.″
″I’m not talking about ordering a pizza or getting take out. I’m talking about going out to a nice restaurant together. We can make it our thing.″
″Our thing?″
″Yeah, our thing. Every month we get a special date night to celebrate hanging in there together a little longer.″
Ben’s smile widened as he squeezed Ray’s hand. ″I like that idea, Ray.″
″Me, too.″ Ray leaned forward and kissed him, took his time, tasted the tea and the chocolate. He pulled away and teased. ″You had one of the doughnuts.″
″I did.″
″I like a chocolate-flavored kiss first thing in the morning.″
″How would you like it later in the day? After our date night, perhaps?″
″I’d like it even more.″
″I think that can be arranged.″
