The LiveJournal Situation

Mar 10, 2022 12:40

Okay, so.

The Russian government is, according to some sources, possibly cutting off communications with the rest of the internet, per the ongoing global situation. The stories are full of "maybe"s and "possible"s, but they have experimented with doing this before. This may also be misinformation and we all might be panicking over nothing. That's important to remember, but what's also important to remember is this:

LJ's servers are in Russia, and subject to Russian law.

I don't know if that means LJ is going to become inaccessible, but that's the distinct fear I see floating around on Dreamwidth and tumblr. I think it's better to treat it as a site that may be going down, rather than as something that will be there forever. So even if it doesn't, I'm going to open the archiving aspect of my community ds-ficminers--which is already pretty broad--to LJ-hosted due South meta and other such communities or individual posts.

I've also got a collection--which should be open and anyone should be able to add to it, but please message me about it if you can't!--on AO3 for the community, as right now it's kind of huge and to my knowledge we may not be able to just import it. I've been going through it starting from 2005 and bookmarking any searched-for fics that are on AO3 and putting in external bookmarks for the things that aren't yet there; any assistance is appreciated! The ds_ficfinders Collection on AO3.

If this isn't appropriate, mods, just let me know and I'll remove it.
