leda_speaks for a superfast beta. I'd love a pair of cops but sadly they aren't yet available to mere fanfic writers.
Caring for Your Cops
Congratulations! You are now the proud owner of a Mountie called Benton Fraser and a Detective named Ray Vecchio. The following contains information about them and guidelines for their care.
Firstly, you are lucky enough to have a pair. Whilst traditionally the Mountie and Detective creatures are a sub-species of the cop family, they are sufficiently related to allow for a harmonious pairing. They may have different backgrounds but you will find that even with two males they will mate very easily. You will have to do very little in the way of encouragement.
Once you have brought your cops home, it’s important that you allow them to have some time to familiarise themselves with both their new environment and each other. Allow them to explore, but make sure there are enough physical barriers in place to keep their exploration safe and always be sure to keep an eye on them. Your Mountie in particular is liable to explore all areas.
Housing
Of course, where your cops are going to live is of vital importance and you should spend as much time as possible making sure their living quarters are up to scratch. You can house them separately, but if you are looking at keeping them as a mating couple then, ideally, they should be housed together.
You will find your Mountie will have more Spartan tastes compared to your detective. It is important to cater to both and not clutter their living area. They will be happy in a an average size apartment, which is the ideal, although in a pinch they can cope in a small one. It should really come equipped with a closet (very important if you are to encourage mating), a kitchen area which is as well equipped as possible and ideally a private bathroom with toilet.
Decor-wise, most colours will do. You might want brighter colours and perhaps some light wood. Your cops will let you know what they like and don’t like about their living quarters, especially your detective.
The place should be clean and neat. For comfort and to encourage mating a nice double bed will be a wise investment. It should be firm yet comfortable and have sheets and blankets that are easily washable, as, depending on the success and nature of their mating program, your cops may frequently require clean bedding.
Other than that, standard fixtures and fittings will do. Be sure there is plenty of light, with chairs and a table to eat at. The rest is up to you.
Clothing
Your Mountie will, of course, wear red however; you should not limit his wardrobe to merely red serge. He will be just as happy wearing a brown uniform. You should not force him to wear the blue as the brown suits him best. He may remove the jacket when indoors but do not worry about this. He will also enjoy wearing denim when not on duty. A good stock of jeans and plaid shirts are perfect for him, and a leather jacket is a nice touch.
Your detective will have more sophisticated tastes. He enjoys Armani and, whilst it is expensive, it is well worth it to see your detective kitted out in such finery. He will be happy to wear shirts and ties so make sure you have a good stock of them. For more casual wear he will still enjoy the Armani label. He may start off wanting bright shirts, but his tastes will most likely become more subdued as time goes on. Polo necks and sweaters are among his casual clothes of choice.
Feeding
The diets of Mounties and detectives are varied. The former has simpler tastes in food than the latter. The way they are raised has significant bearing on this. You have purchased a ‘Vecchio’ detective, a unique group of detective species who have clear tastes. They are fond of pizza and pasta. They are also fond of higher sugar food such as doughnuts. They enjoy their food so it is important that you help cater to their tastes. Do not worry overly about your detective putting on weight; they tend to have high metabolisms and stay pretty slim. However, do make sure that, when housed with a Mountie, your 'Vecchio' detective is not overly influencing your Mountie's calorific intake.
Mounties tend to have simpler tastes. They will enjoy pasta and pizza along with stew, salads and omelettes. Pemmican can be used for special treat. They do tend to need closer diet monitoring than your detective as they have a slower metabolism and may put on weight if overfed. But you should not worry unduly about this, as they also are capable of regulating what they eat. With plenty of exercise, it shouldn’t be a problem.
A varied diet is key.
Exercise
With any cop, exercise is important. This is especially important if you are planning to use your cops for tracking criminals. Whilst that activity will give your cops plenty of exercise, you do need to make sure they stay in shape.
It might be an idea to invest in a 1971 Buick Riveria. Whilst you may find you will get through a few of them it is worth it for the longer trips your cops may take. Although be careful that your detective in particular does not become over reliant on it.
An ideal way to make sure your cops get enough exercise to make sure you have also purchased a wolf. A Diefenbaker is always a lovely addition to any household and walking the wolf will provide your cops with a perfect exercise opportunity. It will also ensure they obtain plenty of fresh air and they may even end up jogging with the Diefenbaker.
You might also encourage them to walk around the neighbourhood. Your Mountie will need little encouragement, your detective might need more, but a properly bonded pair will always go everywhere together. This means that your detective will most likely follow your Mountie. His fitness will no doubt improve over the years they spend together. Do be aware that your Mountie might tend to go into rather less desirable places, such as dumpsters and sewers. Mounties tend not to get dirty but your detective will. We will cover washing your cops in the next section.
It is also worth mentioning that a well-established mating program will provide much of the exercise your cops require.
Cleaning/Washing
Ideally, your cops should be cleaned together. They usually enjoy this arrangement and their interaction can provide interesting moments for you.
They generally should be cleaned with simply soap and water. We issue special Mountie soap which is ideal for this purpose and can be purchased from all good due South stockists. However, if you don’t have Mountie soap you can use an ordinary bar of soap as long as it gives a good lather.
Your detective will mostly likely will need more intense cleaning than your Mountie but you should note that both enjoy the attention. You can often just leave them together with the shower running and some soap and you will find them both clean and happy some time later. It’s best to give them an hour if you can.
They will be quite happy to bathe together everyday.
Mating
As you have purchased two males you might find they are a little slow to mate at first. If you want to speed the process up you can help through subtle encouragement. Having them living together is a key part of this. The odd note left around their living space can help as can flowers. You will find, though, eventually they will succumb and become a couple.
You will find their choices for where they mate will vary. They will almost certainly enjoy doing so in the closet, which is why it is so important one is provided. They will, of course, also enjoy their bed, but you may find other pieces of furniture are used. At first they might seem awkward about mating in front of you but over time they will lose this inhibition.
These are, of course, merely basic guidelines. Cop-keeping may seem complex, but you care and attention will be amply rewarded as your cops give you pleasure for years to come.
