Summary: Fraser watches Ray try to get dates.
Fraser spent the day watching Ray, not his Ray, this new Ray, try to entice what seemed like every woman in the station to go out with him Friday night. Honestly, Fraser didn’t quite understand what caused all the women to turn Ray down, but he conceded that it might have to do with the ease with which the man jumped from one woman to the next. It argued a certain lack of actual commitment or interest that the women might find troubling. On the other hand, Fraser himself found it encouraging that this man seemed to bounce back from rejection so quickly, it made him feel like when Ray Vecchio returned, shortly, he hoped, this new Ray would have little difficulty adjusting to whomever his next new partner might be. At the very least, this Ray seemed intent on providing a good time for his prospective dates. Dinner, drinks, and dancing to live music were, in Fraser’s understanding, excellent choices for the dating ritual and he admired Ray’s enthusiasm in offering them.
By the end of the day, having finally had the situation explained to him (and, not inconsequentially, having had his life saved by the new Ray) Fraser found himself wondering even more about the women who turned Ray down. The man seemed charming and perfectly amiable. He was, perhaps, a little less polished than the former Ray Vecchio, but his own style was rather endearing. It was no hardship at all for Fraser to ask him out for food after their first day’s work together and, over sandwiches at the local deli, he found himself pondering the conditions the current Ray Vecchio had outlined in his plan for “an ideal first date”. A possible solution to Ray’s conundrum occurred to him.
“Ray?”
“Yeah, Frase?”
“Do you have reservations for Friday night at the Crystal Ballroom?”
“What?”
“The date that you offered to Janie and Elaine, among others, today. Have you already made reservations or were you awaiting an affirmative response before contacting your chosen venue?”
“Oh, that. Uh, yeah, I have reservations. I was planning to take someone specific but, uh, she became unavailable. And I didn’t want to waste the live band.”
“I see. Seeing that it is now Thursday night and, unless I am very much mistaken, you still have no partner to fill the other seat, I would like to offer myself as an alternative.”
“I’m sorry?”
“I would willing to accompany you to the Crystal Ballroom tomorrow evening so that you don’t miss the opportunity to enjoy the live music.”
“Um, Fraser, are you asking me out on a date?”
Was he? No, even if he found this new man charming and attractive, he was only seeking to better understand a person who he would, hypothetically, be spending a great deal of time with in the near future. His interest in men as romantic partners had begun and ended with Mark. Besides, studies about homophobia in the American police force made the likelihood of Ray having a positive response to any overture extremely slim. “On the contrary, Ray, I am only hoping to provide you with company so that you don’t, as you say, waste the live band. If you would prefer to go alone, that is certainly your own choice. I merely wished to give you the option of having a convivial companion for the evening.” Fraser scrubbed his thumb across his eyebrow. “I don’t wish to make you uncomfortable, Ray, I can withdraw my offer if you prefer.”
“Whoa, Fraser, my friend, slow way down. I did not say that I wasn’t gonna take you up on it, I just wanted to clarify. Sure, ain’t any girls gonna go with me. Wanna go to the Crystal Ballroom tomorrow night? I won’t make you dance with me or anything, but we can do dinner and drinks and stuff.”
“I’d like that very much, Ray.”
“Okay. Okay. Great, greatness.”
