Mix n' Match Challenge, Due North by Ekaterinn

I'm not quite sure if this is a proper mix n' match. But I wrote this bit of unusable background for a longer (and quite different) challenge response I'm working on. I thought I would share it with you all now, since it also stands on its own.

"Kowalski, I'm sorry." Welsh said, sounding tired. "You turned in one of your own. Higher-up doesn't want you down here, stirring up trouble."

"Sir," Ray said, "Me and the Mountie, we took out a great chunk of the Great Lakes Mafia, that should count for something."

"It's not my call, Detective."

Ray's shoulders slumped. "Fine. What the fuck happens now? Sir."

Welsh harrumphed. "It's funny that you should mention the Mountie. Seems that the Canadians actually like you for some odd reason. You're to be a liaison to the RCMP, stationed at Invuik."

Invuik? Isn't that where Frase was transferring to? Ray frowned and leaned forward. "That makes no sense at all."

"Cross-country policing. Wave of future." Welsh told him, sliding an envelope across the desk. "Your plane leaves in two days." He paused. "When this calms down, you'll have a place here."

Ray took the envelope and nodded tightly. "Thank you, sir." Maybe this won't be so bad after all. Cool out in Canada - maybe I'll get to work with Frase again, that would be greatness - and then come back here.

"Dismissed, Detective." Welsh jerked his head and Ray walked out of his office, headed due north.
