Dief's Secret
Fraser looked closely at Diefenbaker. The wolf seemed...different and Fraser wasn't entirely sure why. He had estimated Dief's weight and it appeared to be remaining the same, despite his increased junk food intake. Dief didn't appear to have grown in terms of height either. He wasn't especially lethargic, nor vocal. Fraser just knew there was something different about him.
“Hey, Benny, you ready?” Ray called as he arrived to give Fraser a lift.
“Yes, Ray.” Fraser cocked his head to see if he could see anything different about Dief from a different angle.
“Are you okay?” Ray asked, coming up behind him.
“Do you notice anything different about Diefenbaker, Ray?”
Ray looked at the wolf. “Like what?”
“I'm not sure.”
Ray frowned slightly. “So, why are you asking me?”
“Well, you know Diefenbaker, Ray. You see him everyday, you'd notice if something was wrong with him.”
“You think there's something wrong with Dief?” Ray sounded a little worried.
Fraser was thoughtful. He'd assumed that whatever it was wasn't good but Dief was just...different. “I'm not sure. Does he seem different to you?”
“Yeah, his fur looks...” Ray paused. “Good.”
“I think that's the result of the new shampoo, Ray.” It had been specially recommended to Fraser by a very nice lady he'd met in the park. She'd said it had done wonders for the fur of her rough collies.
Ray shrugged. “So maybe he looks different because of shampoo.”
“Do you think it's physical?”
Ray didn't answer right away. “What else would it be?” he asked.
Fraser tried to explain, keeping an eye on Diefenbaker who was sitting innocently a few feet away. “Changes in a person aren't limited to physical changes, Ray. A change in confidence can create different body language. “
Rat glanced at the wolf. “Dief's sitting down. How am I supposed to be able to tell?”
Fraser shook his head, perhaps he was over thinking this. “Maybe I;m imagining things, Ray.”
“You could ask him.”
“He's not been very talkative of late. “ Fraser had tried to casually broach the subject a number of times but Dief had acted as if he was deaf. Of course he was deaf but he closed his eyes so he couldn't even lip-read.
Fraser's thoughts were broken by Ray shuffling his feet.
“Hey, Benny, can I use the John?”
Fraser was puzzled. “I thought you said it you'd only use it if every other one in Chicago was out of order.”
“A guy can change his mind,” Ray replied.
“You're welcome to, Ray.”
Fraser watched as Ray disappeared into the small bathroom. It seemed strange that Ray wanted to use the bathroom, he'd never used it before. Maybe he'd left Fraser alone with Diefenbaker to talk to him. Fraser was grateful for the opportunity and decided to use it.
He cleared his throat. “Are you all right, Diefenbaker?” he asked.
The wolf whined as if to say; 'What a silly question to ask.'
“I'm sorry, Dief, but you seem a little...” Fraser tried searching for a word that would fit, he decided to go for the obvious one. “Different.”
Dief barked.
“No, it's not a bad thing,” Fraser reassured him. “I was just wondering...I mean you're not worried about something. You know you can tell me anything. Don't you?”
Dief whined and lay down.
“I'm not going to be mad, Diefenbaker. If there's something bothering you...”
Another whine came from the wolf. He sat up again.
“You have something to show me?” Fraser guessed.
Dief barked and walked over to the closet.
Intrigued, Fraser followed him. As he got closer he was sure he could hear something; something small and furry.
Dief paused outside the door and gave another bark.
Fraser opened the door and inside the closet, in a basket with a blue blanket was a litter of small puppies. Fraser counted four of them and they appeared to be an odd mix of husky, wolf and another breed he couldn't determine. They were young, possibly just four weeks old. Diefenbaker was already licking them. Fraser bent down for a closer look.
The puppies were very cute. They also bore a suspicious resemblance to a certain deaf wolf. Fraser reached out and touched the fur of one of them. It was very soft. One snuffled his hand and Fraser felt a funny feeling in his stomach. Yes they were very cute. He was so caught up in looking at them he didn't notice Ray come up behind him.
“Well, it's about time you finally told him!”
Fraser realised the comment was directed to Dief.
“You knew about this?” Fraser asked, turning to Ray.
“Yeah, Dief told me. Well, he showed me. They were in the back seat of the Riv after I dropped you at the Consulate.”
Dief whined and nuzzled the puppies.
“They're yours?” Fraser asked, he didn't have many doubts but he would like to be sure.
The answer was an affirmative bark.
“You could have told me,” Fraser said. “You didn't have to hide them in the closet.”
“Maybe he didn't know how to tell you,” Ray suggested. “What are you going to do?”
“Well, where's their mother?”
Dief looked sad and whined mournfully.
“Oh, I see. I'm sorry, Dief. They can stay here. Although I'm not sure what we should feed them.” Fraser turned to his human friend. “Ray? Can we stop at the vet's?”
“We're already going to be late, “Ray pointed out.
“Ray.”
It took less than a minute for Ray to give in. “Fine, we'll take them to the vet.”
“At least we know why Dief seems different.”
Ray knelt down by Fraser and cautiously stroked one of the puppies. “Yeah, fatherhood. As long as he doesn't make a habit of it.”
“They are cute though, Ray.”
“Yeah, I guess so,” Ray replied.
As it turned out Diefenbaker wasn't the only one acting differently, as playing with the four puppies turned both humans to mush, figuratively speaking. Ray didn't even look at his watch to see how late they were. Which was just as well as his suit was covered in puppy fur. Fraser kept quiet about that, not noticing one puppy had relieved himself on his uniform. Diefenbaker said nothing, he just admired his humans attention to his offspring. It would work out after-all he decided.
