Vecchio/Kowalski, 543 words, PG13, un-beted because hi, I FAIL. um, this was so last minute that I pretty much finished it two seconds ago.
When Ray wakes up in a hospital room and is greeted with Vecchio’s big nose and Vecchio’s annoyed “I thought I told you to duck”, he sort of wants to call for the nurse to knock him back out.
Instead he settles for a weak Shut up, Vecchio, and waits impatiently to be released.
Ray’s back at work sooner than he should be. He still has a bandage on his temple; something he says is proof of his bravery but everyone else says is proof of his stupidity. It’s not Ray’s fault he didn’t know Vecchio was talking to him that night.
Every time Vecchio has to repeat himself he blames the bandage and says that maybe Ray should just go home. Ray can’t figure out if Vecchio’s being sarcastic or oddly concerned; he answers with the same obscene gestures each time anyway.
But the comments don’t stop; they just get weirder in the sense that Ray starts to think Vecchio’s being serious. He wonders if maybe Vecchio feels guilty for being the one who threw the flowerpot (complete with flower) in the first place, and he can’t figure out if he should be playing along for sympathy or yelling at his partner to stop because, y’know - he’s fine.
Vecchio buys him a drink after a particularly involved case and they talk about Fraser. Mostly, Vecchio talks. Fraser would have solved the case faster, but Vecchio’d be out a good suit in the end and who knew what else. He says that if Fraser had been around, Vecchio’d be the one with a head bandage, not Ray. And Ray gets ticked off quick, spits back something defensive before he realizes that Vecchio’s putting himself on Ray’s side.
Ray buys them another round.
When Ray wakes up in Vecchio’s bed in Vecchio’s apartment he kind of wants to blame the long-gone concussion. Unfortunately, he can remember pretty much every detail of what led him there. What happened once they were there.
The way Vecchio tasted, how his hand felt on Ray. Ray remembers being surprised (impressed, turned-on) with how skilled Vecchio’s hand actually was, bringing him off hard and fast like he wasn’t interested in taking his time.
Ray surprises himself when he thinks that maybe next time, they can.
It’s not awkward. It’s almost awkward how not-awkward it really is, actually, but they’re too busy with work and sex to talk about it. Ray’s just fine with that, fine with the way they continue doing what they started with an easiness like breathing.
Vecchio’s apartment is barer than Ray’s on account of his living there a shorter amount of time, so mostly they go to Ray’s. His bed is bigger; Ray likes to say that size matters. Somehow Vecchio doesn’t seem amused, but he knows how to get the grin off Ray’s face like a charm, every time.
The time comes when Ray realises he’s around Vecchio more often than he isn’t, and he’s fine with that, too.
When Vecchio wakes up comes to in a hospital room at the crime scene he’s greeted by Ray’s “I thought I told you to duck,” and it’s not annoyed at all. It’s relief and humor and fondness, all; and Vecchio? Vecchio’s smile matches perfectly.

sprat; prompt: "I thought I told you to duck."
added notes: this turned out so much less funny than I expected it to be from the prompt. heh. And I really don't even know how I feel about the outcome or the style or the.. fun fun strike outs. But, um, yay for trying new things? :D
