4. When have Julian's ideas about dating ever been everything but terrible?

5. The Daxes immediately lifted the traditional Trill ban on associating with a former host's partners.

I am very fond of this episode, mostly because it's such an ensemble piece with many great character moments--Dax geeking out about hypothetical smart fungus when everyone else just wants to get home and struggling with guilt later, Kira's moral dilemma, RA genuinely selling me on older!Odo, Sisko with the baby, etc.

But I particularly like the twist at the end re older!Odo's responsibility, partly because it's one very, very, very few twists in DS9 I have not seen coming from miles away and/or been spoiled for. It genuinely surprised me but made a lot of sense, adds effective tension to the Kira/Odo relationship, works with the fact that Odo seems isolated from the rest of the settlement (we never seen him interact with anyone but Kira, while everyone else's scenes are communal), and above all reminded me of Odo's similarity to the Founders, with their tendency to make decisions for entire civilizations from afar. It's quietly and effectively creepy to see that Odo a few hundred years from now may have more in common with his people than we might think.
