Today, I've been writting my Big Fannish Project of the moment, so I thought I'd give you some research links to help you out. Because I've spent way too long looking for stuff lately.

Chicago Police Department employs our Rays. It's hard to search for Police Districts by location, though.

Try this:

This freely browsable database of crimes reported in Chicago shows the locations of the 25 districts

Obviously I'm very big on doing research, too. Your post is a treasure trove!! Thanks so much!

Also I have located the 2-7. Actually, there is no 2-7 anymore in real life, nor was there in 1997-98, but there is an address given for the 2-7 in BDtH, and I found where it would be on the map if it existed. It's in the heart of downtown Chicago--no surprise, right? (The zip code shown is slightly off, though--and Vecchio wouldn't have got that wrong.)

The numbers on that street end about 20 nonexistent doors from where the mythical 2-7 is, but if we put it right there at the end of the block (or really anywhere on the same street), the 2-7 is actually in the 12th district, in beat 1932. So I'm postulating a mythical 2-7 that uses some of the 12th's territory and some of the adjoining 9th's as well.

I am probably nuts.

Just saying. :)

Oh, oh, and I love this tidbit: Boys Town, the gay district of Chicago, is in the CPD's 1-9 district, where Dewey once worked.. I am so going to exploit that. Some writers have it that Ray K. worked there, but I find that a stretch, since he and Dewey didn't recognize each other on meeting in ( ... )

I'm going to keep it in the loop for my current fic, just because I don't particularly want to unpick my entire driving scene. *is shallow and work shy* I could go for a loop location, geography and streetnames not permitting, just because it would have to be close enough to the old consulate... maybe.

Mythical street numbers are probably related to 555 phone numbers.

I'd probably be a bit more interested minus migraine, so now I'm just going to hum along until I know the words and leave the intellectual stuff to you and shoemaster.

Whooo-hooo! Massive thanks for the links! As an American trying to blend in in New Zealand, some of them are gonna help in RL. ^^;;

Oh, BTW?

Chicago is the Home of the Twinkie. Yes, the cream-filled yellow spongecake. The only working factory is in Chicago. ^____^
And I believe it's somewhere on Diversey Avenue...

Hey, thanks!

(SO not asking about software. I spent way too much fucking time tonight (this morning) re-activating my Norton Internet Security, which had decided my subscription was expired, which it was not. Grrrr! It finally worked; I don't know why; I'm guessing Mercury's fucking retrograde again, and I'm keeping my fingers crossed for the next three weeks. Amen. :)
