Hejsan!

We just came back from a 4-day trip from California. What fun!

Saturday marked the 5 year anniversary of my grandpa's death. Our family went to Lakewood earlier in the morning to attend a mass that was specifically for him. This would be my first time going to church in about 5 months.
So of course we arrive when everyone else was walking out. Later was breakfast and a trip to Forest Lawn, a great opportunity for a family portrait! Apparently people think it's weird to take pictures at a cemetery or funeral. What's wrong with wanting to include the entire family in the picture? Anyway, there was a party afterward at my aunt's house. No air conditioning. I wanted very badly to take off my pants and sprawl out on the floor, but out of respect for everyone else, I managed to restrain myself. Later I found out my sister felt the same way.

Well the primary reason we went to CA was to help my sister move into a nice little apartment in San Diego. I was mostly a lazy, useless peice of crap, taking about 3-4 naps a day, but I did help assemble a futon! I thought the trip would include a walk around her neighborhood, shopping at all the over-priced thrift stores. I brought my running shoes because I thought we'd be able to go to Balboa Park.
I thought it would be a gastronomic adventure with all the restaurants around, but my dad and I ended up eating at Baja Fresh for lunch one day. Whoopie. Aside from those few disappointments, it was an overall successful trip. My sister got a lot done and her place is pretty cool. The weather is really nice, and the landscaping and plants around her apartment are quite interesting. The hugs and goodbyes this morning emphasized what a cold emotionless robot I've become, how I have the inability to show any affection whatsoever. But I'll at least say that I'm really happy for her and that I know she won't be coming back home in 3 months this time. Okay, that's enough of that, I feel gross now (It's your fault I'm like this anyway!).

We went to IKEA to shop for some of her furniture while we were there. I've been there once before, and it was a lot of fun because they have so much stuff! The showrooms are just so well designed and everything is cheap, making the consumer think, "Gosh, look how great this room looks! And it'll only cost me this much for me to do it!" Oh those Swedes. While there I remembered reading something about speech pathology in Sweden, then thought, Wow, I'm totally going to do some study abroad thing there for grad school. I can hang out with my Swedish friends, Sven and Anna, and have fabulous dinner parties in my IKEA furnished flat, sipping wine and smoking cigarettes in my new dress I bought at H&M. Then I figured I was getting way too ahead of myself. Maybe I should do the France thing first. And before that I should at least find out when I'm actually supposed to be in Reno. "Some time at the end of August" really isn't good enough anymore.
