16 aspects of daily life:
1. Understanding- To grasp or comprehend the meaning intended or expressed by another.
2. Sincerity- The quality or condition of being sincere; genuineness, honesty, and freedom from duplicity.
3. Respect- Willingness to show consideration or appreciation.
4. Honesty- The quality or condition of being honest; integrity
5. Tolerance- The capacity for or the practice of recognizing and respecting the beliefs or practices of others.
6. Open-mindedness- Showing receptiveness to new and different ideas or the opinions of others; Having or showing an inclination to respect views and beliefs that differ from one's own: a broad-minded judge; shows broad sympathies; a tolerant attitude.
7. Resisting the urge to be judgmental towards others; being "narrow-minded"- Lacking tolerance, breadth of view, or sympathy; petty. It goes back to that old saying, "don't judge a book by it's cover"...It's hard to resist the temptation, but it's worth it. If I was still the same way I was 5 years ago, I would be so misrable right now...I would have missed out on meeting some really amazing people.
8. Admitting fault and defeat...swallowing the ol' pride.
9. Admitting no one's perfect; we all make mistakes.
10. Maturity- It generally helps when dealing with number's 8 and 9.
11. Opinions when backed up by reason. It bothers me when someone will express a really passionate opinion, but can't follow through in the explanation department...goes back to the whole "talking and talking and talking, but not really saying much of anything" theory.
12. Expression...wether it's artistic, emotional, verbal or intellectual...expression is great.
13. Listening- To pay attention to; listen to and consider. I do a lot of listening.
14. Communication- The exchange of thoughts, messages, or information, as by speech, signals, writing, or behavior; The art and technique of using words effectively to impart information or ideas. Living in a world without communication would lead to complete and utter chaos. Without communication, we would still be running around like cave men, grunting and picking lice out of our hair. Evolution rulz!!!!!1!!1!
15. The Golden Rule- Treat others the way you would like to be treated.
16. Acts of selflessness- Having, exhibiting, or motivated by no concern for oneself; unselfish. Even if I don't always want to do what's been asked of me, I really love knowing that I helped someone in need.
I've been trying really hard for the last 12 months to practice what I preach; Really hard. Every now and then I catch myself saying or doing something I wish I hadn't had said/done, but all in all, I think I'm becoming a better person. Although I know I've opened the door for increased ridicule and rolled out the proverbial doormat, I'd much rather know in my heart that I'm being the 'bigger person'...I totally ripped that last bit off of my mom. She used to say to me, "Audrey, be the bigger person and walk away"...and for the most part, I did. I have a high tolerance for bullshit, lets put it that way.
I don't think the fact that people have treated me poorly or disrespectfully in the past gives me the right to turn around and do the same to them...an eye for an eye leaves the whole world blind. So for every insult I take, for every subliminal hint of hate...you will get the biggest, pearly white smile in return.
