Two young men were looking through a photo album. St. John Allerdyce felt a warm nostalgia seeing Bobby as a ten year old dressed in a little-league outfit. John traced the figure on the picture with a latex-gloved finger.
"Your boyfriend's cute."
"Yeah."
The two went upstairs to Bobby's room. John laid on the bed and put The Best of the Police on the CD player. He relished the scent on the pillow before putting his head on it. The other man read through some old manga Bobby collected. John was reminiscing over the good times he and his Iceman had together. John saw a dress shirt of Bobby's and put it in his travel bag.
"Check this out." His friend said. John saw a letter on Bobby's desk. It was a love letter addressed to Bobby from John Paul but it looked like it was unopened. He frowned but pocketed it anyway.
"These guys seem to be normal."
"Outside of the photo album they took down all the photos of Bobby."
"That sucks, why is he still here?"
"He's trying to put things together again. I have to commend him. C'mon lets go to the kitchen."
"Sure."
"See anything?"
"Probably just this volume of Tsubasa Reservoir Chronicle. You?"
"Eh, everything. I'll be back."
They went to the kitchen and John opened a bottle of wine. Both boys drank a glass.
"Out of all the families, couples and people in general we met these people are the most boring." John's friend said as he sipped the red liquid casually, sounding bored.
"Yeah, but I really love this guy a lot."
"I like the handcuffs in the master bedroom and the lingerie on his father's side of the drawer though."
"Don't read too much into it. They don't act like it but they have bouts of sloppiness." John said as he opened the silverware drawer and made a mess of the carefully crafted forks and spoons. Then they went to the living room and sat on the sofa and watched some home movies.
"Aw, dad! What now?" Said an annoyed Bobby on the screen. He was dressed in pajamas and was going to try and brush his teeth.
"I just want to see my boy before the big day!" his dad's voice could be heard.
"It's just prep school."
"It's a school for the Gifted!"
"And Bobby is only a C average." came Ronnie's sullen voice. The camera then turned to Ronnie and he had his flannels and boxers on. John fast forwarded through most of Ronnie's and his father's dialogue. A half hour later John's friend started to yawn.
"Sorry, I shouldn't put all my relationship shit on you."
"Nah, man it's okay. I always like doing this sort of thing anyway. Having it connected to you just makes it...I don't know, more special?"
"I know. Being here, knowing what he's doing, what his secrets might be. It's way better than when...well..."
"I understand. Ready then?"
"Yeah, let me just get situated." John said. He took a pair of Mr. Drake's cigars and began to smoke one. He offered one to his friend but he declined. He also took a DVD of The Empire Strikes Back and a home movie of Bobby's 12th birthday party and put it in his bag and he prayed to God that it suddenly wouldn't turn into something about Ronnie like the other four videos he watched about Bobby did. He put some ashes in the ashtray and he still puffed away on the cigar.
John and his accomplice silently crept out of the large house in the middle of the afternoon and closed the door. They kept it unlocked. It was strangely quiet with very few people on the street. No one said anything about them and their large bag or their gloved hands that wouldn't leave fingerprints. His friend drove them down the street in their beat up Volkswagen and John sat back really savoring his cigar.
"Fuck! That was awesome!!"
"Sure was Johnny boy! Think they'll know?"
"Yeah, but they probably won't know what hit em."
"Strange what you do for someone who doesn't love you back."
"Things'll work out. It hurts but I got some things to keep me company."
"Pfft, now." he retorted. John just laughed. "I like this. I like being in people's lives. I like knowing what they do and who they're with and even how they freaking feel!" His friend said with a smug smile on his face. "I'm just relieved nobody came home."
"Power. It's not always about the destruction. I see that now. I like having this side of me. Taking lives without killing."
"So who's next? There's this old couple on the other side of town."
"Let's go grab a pizza first, I'm starving."John said. He took another drag of the cigar and idly watched the scenery go by, mellowed out by his intimate mid-afternoon visit.
Which Bobby never knew about.
