Chapter Nine: FLASH!

‘clickFLASH’ ‘clickFLASH’ ‘clickFLASH’

Bobby yelped at the sudden flash of a camera, three pictures being taken. He looked with wide eyes at the door, which was slightly open, a ‘pitterpatter’ of rain hitting his kitchen floor just hitting his head. He hadn’t even realized it was open, hadn’t heard the key insert itself into the lock, hadn’t heard the doorknob shift and twist open, hadn’t heard the slight gasp of surprise and the camera phone being pulled from a pocket. Of course he hadn’t heard it, and of course John hadn’t heard it. Bobby had been too shocked and John had been too worried about Bobby’s reaction. Yes. John was worried. He really didn’t like to be put down, you know. But he figured, even if the kid wasn’t gay-and besides the fact that that’d probably be a really strange turn of events-he’d probably go out with John for the pure sake of going out with John. And that’s what he was probably most worried about.

To Bobby, it seemed as if his mind had gone into a state of shock. Because this could not be happening. He…First of all, he’d been asked out by freaking St. John Allerdyce , and secondly…His brother had to see it.

Yes, his brother. Little Ronny Drake had to just choose this moment to suddenly come over Bobby’s house, this moment out of all others, and he never really liked Bobby in the first place-because Ronny believed that Bobby was the favorite, their perfect child, so Ronny had become all ‘depressed’ and ‘moody’ and of course, disliked the attention his older brother got, and this was no different-and had only frequented his house like, four times in the two years that he had it.

John whirled around to face the flashes and the clicks, a look of confusion on his face. Bobby suddenly felt anger starting to creep through him. Because…Why did Ronny have to come right now?! He didn’t, but now he was probably going to get Bobby and John into deeper ‘trouble’ with the press and that wouldn’t be a good thing because hadn’t John just said he was trying to avoid them? Well it would make sense. Bobby figured that press were very annoying. But you know, if they didn’t have press, how would the fangirls find out anything? Well. They wouldn’t. So yeah, while there was a few advantages to the press, they were probably really annoying.

Yeah. Back to the anger part. Ronny had ruined this moment, this-well a Picture Perfect moment would be…not the best thing to call it-once in a lifetime really moment that he was sharing with John. His fists clenched slightly. A flash of Brown hair he saw by the doorway and Ronny had turned and started to run. Bobby felt tears pricking at his eyes. He remembered his birthday party seven years ago where Ronny had ruined it by shoving his face into his cake. And the years before and after that until three years ago were filled with little torture and torment.

“Ronny you PRICK.” He yelled after him, running out to the yard in front of his kitchen door, stopping on the doorstep. And had he been only a few years younger he would’ve yelled something like ‘I’m telling Mom!’ But he wasn’t and John was in the general vicinity so he, ah, didn’t.

Bobby started to run after Ronny, and hadn’t made it very far when-

‘Squelsh thud squelshhhh’*

Bobby blinked, seeing…Damnit. Nothing. He rolled over, feeling very squishy and…Cried out in frustration, sitting up, as he realized he had tripped on his socks-and oh god he forgot to put shoes on, stupid, stupid him-which had…well. He’d gotten his foot stuck in the mud, and it had pulled his left sock right off. Bobby let out another cry and the tears that had been pricking down at his eyes started to fall. Because of everything that was happening. Because he’d embarrassed himself in front of John again, because of the overwhelming boyfriend question, because of Sam’s fic-and he was lucky that he didn’t know that there was a few more on Dry_Ice as he thought-and because of all the trouble it caused, because of Ronny and how he ruined everything and…Bobby had pulled his knees to his chest, and was sitting in the mud, crying as the rain fell around his body.

He hated this. Hated this so much. Loved John, yes, yes, wanted to agree to his request, to his question, say yes, yes, oh god yes, but it wasn’t going to happen, hadn’t happened yet and his brother was a sneaky ass and oh hated him so much and-tensed as he suddenly felt arms slide around him, under his armpits and on his chest as John had crouched down in the mud and started to pick Bobby up. “C’mon.” He whispered softly, breath hot on Bobby’s ear. And Bobby, still rather stunned, got up and turned to John. They both were all muddy now. Bobby was still crying, tears blending in with the rain as they washed the mud from his face.

“I’m…sorry.” Bobby whispered. He’d let John down. Ronny was going to snitch to the press and any chance of John having a secret, of getting away, was gone. His brother was gone too, so there was no use bribing him. Even if they could try, Bobby didn’t think that Ronny would agree to anything.

John frowned at that, wrapping his arms around Bobby as he pulled him close. He felt the squishy mud as it seeped into his sneakers and ew hated that feeling, though knew Bobby had it worse, because he was wearing only one sock. “No, no, Bobby. Don’t be sorry. It’s not your fault. Shh. Bobby, don’t cry.” Whispered words, only speaking above the rain and the mud and the slight thunder that he heard, not louder.

But Bobby, though he stopped crying…the tears were still running down his face, and he was ashamed. He was still crying and he should probably stop but as he suddenly, in a burst of courage, pressed himself against John, head on his shoulder, nose rubbing slightly against John’s neck, and he would’ve been getting John’s shirt wet-yet again-if the rain hadn’t already done that for him.

John didn’t even tense, just pulled Bobby closer. “Don’t cry Bobby. It’s going to be okay.” He smiled slightly. “Just think of this as less work for Wanda and Raven?” He laughed slightly as Bobby hugged him and…then slowly pulled away. “Bobby, c’mon. Let’s go get some of your things. We can stay at my place for a while.” And Bobby nodded, head swimming as John tugged him inside his house, walking slightly fast. He wanted to be there before any press came here, and then it would be hard to get away.

Bobby slowly made his way up to his room, grabbing a backpack that he had thrown into his closet and started to throw things in it, unplugging his laptop and placing that in there as well, rolling the cord and placing it by the back, a few clothes on top of and around it. He tossed some other necessities in there and went down to his kitchen. Again with the normally, he would’ve cared if he even stepped on his kitchen floor covered in mud. But today and yesterday, he concluded right then, was not normal by any means. And so they didn’t count. Not one bit.

When he got downstairs, John was calling someone and pacing the kitchen, waiting for Bobby. When he finally realized that the other boy was standing up at him, looking at him curiously, John hung up with a ‘bye’.

“Remy, a friend of mine who lives fairly close to here,” He explained quickly, a slight smile on his face. “Will pick us up a few houses down the road. You might want to…lock up and everything.” He said slightly. He had shut the door and tidied up the kitchen very slightly while Bobby was getting his things and he was no on the phone with Remy.

Bobby nodded yet again and closed the windows, locked the other door that was around the back of his house, before he started to the kitchen once again. “Everything’s all…locked up.” He smiled slightly.

John took his hand. “Everything will be fine.” He said softly, before starting to tug Bobby out the kitchen door and into the rain again. Neither of them had bothered to change-though Bobby had the decency to get another pair of socks and put some shoes on-and he knew that they were probably going to get wet again. He locked the door behind them. He saw Bobby’s face glow with a blush and excitement as they walked off to where Remy was supposed to meet them.

“Consider this a new chapter, Bobby.”
