Yeah… today was the worst day of work ever… except really not…. but it could’ve been. Instead Laurel and Adam and Sam kinda made it nice and awesome instead of how shitty it should’ve been. Also…. Stop and Shop just came out with the worst worst worst possible policies regarding refunds…. there will be a whole section dedicated to my bitching on that subject.
So yeah… get to work…. my midnight cashier is Dave Allard. I cried. I almost walked right back out the door. They don’t pay me enough for that shit. Just…. no. Paul Dwyer and Dave Allard for the whole night from 9:30 until 11 just us…. and from 11 until midnight just me and Dave…. all bad.
So yeah…. Sam and I spent our entire two hours or so together making fun of Dave Allard. It was a blast. She nicknamed him To Lazy To Do Anything Dave. It’s appropriate. I had him on 4…. as far away as I could get him. Plus he could watch selfscan. So…. while we’re making fun of him….. and as people are coming into his lane…. Dave just walks right out of the store. I did a 720 as I spun around trying to figure out what just happened. Then I just sputtered at Sam. I mean…. what the hell…. who just walks out of the store while on register. I mean he left his light on too. I mean… just….but…. WHAT THE HELL?!?! I hate him.
So By 8:30 it was just me, Sam, and Dave. Trevor was on carts. We were a little shorthanded. No blocking got done… but Dave did get all the returns done before going on register… and he did a coffee run. Plus he fucking cashed a paycheck during his shift…. I lambasted him for that and took that time out of his break.
Sam left me alone at 9:30…. I begged her to stay… but she said no. Nick and Ben Barnanby left at 9… I asked either of them to stay… but even Nick wouldn’t save me from a night of Dave.
But honestly…. it wasn’t that bad. I did bags, did returns, did trash, did whatever I could to keep myself busy and just left Dave to his devices… though I did make him clean the registers and do stuff to keep busy. We both kept to ourselves and it was good.
At like 11 Adam came in with his friend…. who was cute… totally the nerdy type that can make me melt. I ended up taking my break then and sat outside with them and ignored Dave some more…. it was nice.
So now… our new policy….. no hassle returns. A customer no longer needs a receipt or the item to return it. Basically you can walk up to the service desk…. say you bought a $100 air conditioner and say it didn’t work and get the money back for it. We are not allowed to question the customer. We are not allowed to doubt or check.
If a customer comes up to a register with groceries and something rings up at $3.99 and the customer says there was s sign saying it was $3.00 we can’t even check to see…. we must immediately give it to them for free.
Eventually any returns over $20 will be refunded with gift cards, but until then it’s open season on free money. And even still… as long at your item is less than $15 you can just get $15 every single day for free at each location. And there is nothing we can do about it.
Also…. amidst this policy was tons of hilarious descriptions of phrases we’re supposed to use on the phone… and details on no hassle rainchecks…. because apparently we used to harass people for getting them.
But I just am so so pissed. I mean… what the fuck. I cannot enforce this in good conscience. It is just encouraging people to rip us off. Al of these people that we just finally have gotten rid of because we’ve identified them as repeat offenders…. now they get all the free money they want. Today already there were about $60 of HBC and grocery items that Laurel took back that looked like they probably came right off the shelf and were never bought. I mean… you just walk into the store… grab something expensive and go to the service desk and say you want to return it. And you get money for it. You can do it all day long. I mean…. $15 a day is a lot…. that’s $105 per week….. about $420 a month, $5460 per year. That’s a lot of money that a person can rip off. And even if they only do it once a week…. that’s still $780 per year. Just fuck all of that.
I don’t know how I can do that with a straight face. I mean… I struggle enough with just the people taking advantage of our it’s free if it scans wrong. This is just so much worse and so much more blatant. I want to talk to Blair. I want to talk to him a considerable deal about this. I won’t get anywhere… but I want to make it clear how dumb I think it is and that I will enforce it if he truly wants me to…. but I will take perverse pleasure in every time we get ripped off and write it up for him. I think SD and all CDH’s should keep track of every customer they would refuse if we didn’t have this policy so we can give him a nice account of how much money we throw away each day and each week.
Yeah…. I’m just so frustrated… I said to Sam after I signed it that I felt violated. I really do…. it’s like they’ve undone all the work I’ve done there in the past three years… all the work we’ve done to eliminate scammers… and now they’ve just ripped our pants down, turned us around and bent us over for every customer to screw us. It just sucks. And we have to do in yellow or purple shirts too.
