For anyone as bored as me.
I am writing my Scottish History essay and I came across an extract from a kirk session. Kirk sessions were religious bodies who punished people for committing sins (which were regarding as being on the same level as crimes) as well as providing for the poor and needy.
I wonder if anyone can guess what the following incident is describing:
Elgin kirk session 8th May 1640
Compeirit John Peeterkin for letting downe some vrine on Mr James Strachane, scoolemaster, out of the wast laft of the kirk in tyme of divyne service.
I thought it was hilarious when the lecturer told us what it was.
John Peeterkine climbed into the rafters of the church during a service and peed all over James Strachane! The lecturer commented "Not much has really changed in Scottish society over the past 300 years." Sadly, we don't find out what happened to John.
Another fun fact
A 'pricker' was a real job in the 17th Century. They had to go around pricking people with a needle to find an area of the body insensitive to pain. This would be regarded as the Devil's mark and the individual will be accused of witchcraft.
Yes, I sniggered when 'pricker' was said in the lecture.
