Gastrointestinal update:
Yup, lots of diarrhea.
In Delhi, I ate the things tourists are never supposed to eat. I suffered mild consequences, but nothing consistent, certainly nothing like the Pompeii-style, swab the poop deck explosive shits I'd been warned about.
Much harder on my system has been the transition to a vegetarian diet, not helped by the fact that everything is very soupy and watery. Breakfast is the one meal that feels truly substantial and doesn't give me the runs.
I am now one week into a completely vegetarian diet. I don't see how you can be a vegetarian in the US. Veggies here are done right: lots of spices, variety, and protein. And none of this vegan nonsense; lots of yogurt and dairy (yes, the milk is boiled, not pasteurized). It's delicious! It does not, however, fill me up, and I find myself starving all the time and craving meat. Ah well. I will eat meat again eventually, when vegetarian food ceases being free. Perhaps I just need to eat a LOT more of the lentils and beans. Except the hunger and pooping, it's been great; I've been eating healthier and sleeping better (though the Mefloquine anti-malarial drug gives me some weird intense dreams, mostly drama but also the occasional action-packed spectacular; who needs movies?).
I love how animals are simply integrated into life here. Camels, cows, buffalo, donkeys and sheep walk down the street, sometimes herded but more often just doing their own thing. Dogs have their own doggy societies that have nothing to do with humans. Animals are all around, coexisting with people. I do have to resist the urge to pet them. That is one sad thing, that this is not at all a pet culture. And the dogs are dirty, mangy and skinny, and people are mean to them, kicking them all the time, treating them as pests.
I have also seen monkeys and elephants, though the elephants are all domesticated religious icons. Wild monkeys are apparently quite vicious, but I leave them alone and they give me the same courtesy.
I will have to take a picture of the lizards. They are pale, cute, skittish, and everywhere in the shade.
I apologize for my lack of posting, and pictures. I shall attempt to make both more frequent.
