“Hideto-san, please try to look relaxed!”

These were foreign words to Hideto. He had never had a problem being what he had to be in front of the camera before. In front of the camera, he was in his element and could be sad or happy or whatever he was asked to be. And the words that had been yelled at him barely registered in his head before another flash blinded him. He didn’t even wince - he had gotten used to it already. When the words did sink into his head moments later, though, he offered the photographer a wry smile and just moved into another pose, raising a hand to the fedora hat on top of his head.

“Sorry, I just got a lot on my mind.”

“Well, clear your mind!”

Hideto bit back the urge to sigh as another flash covered his body. Licking his lips, he forced himself to relax. He emptied his head of all thoughts and, instead, envisioned what he would look like in the magazine for men’s fashion. He focused on that and got into another pose, sultry look on his face as he tipped the hat downwards in one direction to cover one eye, the other hand tucked into the waistband of the jeans he was wearing, fingerless glove and all. He didn’t get any more complaints from the photographer.

Lingering at the back of his mind, though, was Gackt. It had been two days since the video game character had made his appearance. Hideto had spent those two full days educating Gackt about his world and teaching him how to use the ‘monsters’ around his house. He had dug around in his storeroom for a new ‘trick-slash-treasure’ box too and found the old one he had been using when he first moved here to Tokyo from Osaka. It had been a few years since it had been used but it still worked fine. Teaching Gackt had been fairly easy too as the assassin was a fast learner. Some things that Gackt seemed to be obsessed with for a good part of the day, though, included finding out whether the light in the refrigerator went out when the door was closed and just staring into the microwave and watching the meal in it spin around. Both things made Hideto facepalm repeatedly.

Gackt had, more or less, accepted his fate here, deciding to give up on looking for a way out and for Lord Ezra for the moment. From what he could tell, there was no way out right now and he was stuck here. Hence, he tried to make the best of his time here, learning about the things this world had to offer. The man he was stuck with, Hideto, was nice too and really patient, though he wondered why he kept hitting his face sometimes. Gackt still had suspicions that he was possessed but he decided not to test out that theory immediately, intending to use Hideto as a teacher first before he decided on what actions to take against him.

Hideto had a photoshoot today that had been planned for several weeks already, though. He didn’t want to have to miss it but he didn’t want to leave Gackt at home alone either. But, long ago, Hideto had told himself that he wouldn’t let his sex life, booze and video games mess with his job. And, since Gackt was from a video game…

He had simply told Gackt that he had to leave for a few hours and that he, under any circumstances, could not leave the house. Knowing Gackt could secure his own meals, there were only a few things that he had to deal with before leaving, such as unplugging the main home phone in case someone called and Gackt picked up again. Hideto had been in the shower when that happened and when he had returned to the living room, Gackt was yelling into the receiver and at ‘Lord Ezra’ to return him to Uthonia and face him like a man. He had facepalmed four times at that one. Hideto had, after apologising profusely to the person on the line, then explained what were phones then but he still didn’t want to take any chances. Other things included leaving reminders on how to work the appliances, resulting in sticky-notes plastering the walls. Hideto didn’t want to come back to find out that Gackt had forgotten how to turn off the tap and that his apartment had turned into an underwater playground or something like that.

Hideto had felt like a mom leaving her child at home for the first time when he had been leaving to go to work, telling Gackt where the controls for the television were and that he could read magazines or books if he wanted to and to make sure he ate if he got hungry. The only thing missing was the kiss goodbye.

The model had made sure that absolutely nothing could go wrong but he still couldn’t help but worry. Had he missed something out? Had he forgotten anything? Nothing came to mind but that didn’t stop Hideto from wishing he could wrap up this photoshoot faster.

Sighing, he got into another pose, eyes straying to the clock for a moment. It was already eight-thirty.

He wondered what Gackt was doing now.

It was two hours later that he finally got to leave. Cleaning the make-up from his face and showering took him another half hour but, soon, he was ready. But, it seemed that it just wasn’t Hideto’s night and an interruption in the form of a very sexy but obnoxious colleague had to surface. Hideto had been grabbing his wallet from the table when he felt a presence behind him. He looked over his shoulder, coming face-to-face with Bunta, a male model he had had the (dis)pleasure of working with several times now. It was that annoying smirk on his face, really. It was the epitome of fake and Hideto always got the urge to literally and very roughly wipe it off his face.

It wasn’t a smirk on Bunta’s face this time, though. It was a smile so sweet that it could charm the birds and the bees and make people like Hideto, who was skilled in reading people, puke his guts out.

“Hideto-san,” Bunta greeted with a small nod, smile widening. Hideto resisted the urge to roll his eyes. “I know it’s late but I was wondering if you’d like to catch some dinner with me.”

The offer for a date did not surprise Hideto. After all, in their line of business, it’d be strange if a guy was straight. Hideto merely sighed and turned to face the taller man completely, staring at him, clearly displeased and unamused. “Why are you asking me out? Dude, we don’t even talk.”

“I’d like to get to know you better,” was the cheesy answer Bunta had chosen. It was lame, and maybe even sweet to some ladies, but to Hideto, it was fake. He could hear the lustful undertone, he could see the desire in Bunta’s eyes, could almost hear his lecherous thoughts in his own head. Hideto inwardly rolled his eyes and groaned - he just wanted someone to appreciate him for him and not just because he had a rocking body. He wondered - did Bunta plan to slowly get him drunk or was he just going to drug his drink like the last guy had done?

“Try harder, loser,” Hideto seethed before brushing past the other male model.

God, he was so sick of this shit.

“Gackt? I’m home,” Hideto called out into his apartment, switching on the living room lights. The fact that they had been turned off in the first place puzzled him - where was Gackt? Slipping off his shoes, he walked further into his apartment, looking around. The remote controls for the television were on the coffee table, several magazines left on it as well. Worry was beginning to climb up Hideto’s body and he could feel it doing so, slowly grabbing more and more of him. He walked to the kitchen then and opened the cupboard that held his microwave meals - not one had been touched.

He opened the drawers that held bread and he didn’t find any slices missing. Other ingredients for sandwiches had been left untouched as well. Walking back out into the living room, Hideto began to wonder if he hadn’t just been dreaming the past two days up. Or maybe Gackt had somehow disappeared.

Something clutched at Hideto when he thought about that. He thought about those eyes that had shown such real feeling in them and that something gripped him even tighter. He had never seen such truth in anyone before and, thinking back on the past two days, he realised that it was nice. He had forgotten just how nice it was to have someone. Hideto always distanced himself from others because he heard and he saw their lies. Distancing himself was a form of protection. But the past two days… He hadn’t seen a need to protect himself at all. Gackt didn’t lie and didn’t cheat or pull up masks like everyone else did. Yes, Gackt was slightly annoying and weirded him out and caused trouble. But Hideto wasn’t all that sure that he wanted Gackt to disappear.

Just one more time, he thought to himself. Just one more time, he wanted to see that look in Gackt’s eyes again. Damn, he just wanted to see that look. He had felt something when he had seen such sincerity. Hideto didn’t know what that feeling was but he liked it and he just had to see it again. He just had to know that there was something in this world that wasn’t fake. What he had seen two days ago had ignited a spark of hope that had just begun to die. He didn’t want to give up on that spark so quickly.

He walked to his bedroom and opened the door before stopping there. The worry that hat begun claiming him disappeared in an instant and that strange feeling he got when he looked into Gackt’s eyes returned. And Gackt’s eyes didn’t even have to be open to have such an effect on the model.

The assassin laid on Hideto’s bed, book open next to him.

The smaller man stood there at the door, for a moment, just staring at the supposedly dangerous video game character, now resting with such an innocent look on his face. Subconsciously, the sides of Hideto’s lips started to twitch up - it had been a long time since he had seen such openness.

Gackt laid on top of the bed and the blanket, head resting on a plush pillow with one of his large hands on the book. His lips were slightly parted and his breathing was slow, steady and deep. As Hideto entered his bedroom and stepped closer to Gackt, he started to hear soft snores. He smiled wryly - he heard that people only snored if they weren’t dreaming and he heard that people didn’t dream only if they were really tired. It was then that Hideto realised that Gackt must’ve been exhausted. More exhausted and stressed than Hideto himself was.

Gackt was in a completely new world with absolutely no friends or comrades. He only had a ‘possessed’ man as his guide and he had learned that he would most likely never return to his homeland. And for the past two days, he had had information about pieces of technology and machinery crammed into his head so much that it hurt. He was in a scary land and everything just confused him. Reading the news and watching it upset him too, and looking out the window and at the city made him miss the grassy meadows and beautiful mountains of Uthonia. He had had everything taken from him in a blink of an eye and Hideto hadn’t realised just how draining being here was for him.

Looking closer at the slumbering man, Hideto could see that the fatigue showed on his handsome face. He wondered why he hadn’t noticed before - he had probably been too busy facepalming.

Without a second’s hesitation, he started tugging on the blankets beneath Gackt, causing him to wake up immediately.

A cross between a snort and a chortle escaped the assassin inelegantly as he raised his head quickly, staring at the intruder who simply smiled at him, managing to get the blankets out from under Gackt. “Hideto-dono…”

“Yeah, it’s me,” Hideto said, pulling the blankets, that had been warmed by Gackt’s body, over Gackt. “Go back to sleep.”

Gackt immediately started to sit up, sleepily mumbling out, “I can’t. This is your bed.”

“I have a comfy couch,” Hideto said, honest. He had fallen asleep on that thing several times already, staying up late and playing video games. “Just sleep. You need the bed more than I do, right now.”

Gackt paused in getting up from the bed then, staring at the bewitched man who had been treating him with nothing but kindness since they had met. Eyes half-lidded with sleep, Gackt offered Hideto a sleepy smile as well, reaching a hand up to place on his shoulder, squeezing it gently as he said gratefully, “You are a good man. Thank you.”

The tone in Gackt’s voice almost made Hideto shudder and - yep, there it was. That strange feeling again.

The strange feeling didn’t leave him even after Gackt laid back down in bed, falling back to sleep very quickly. It didn’t leave him as he continued to stay there for a few more minutes, petting Gackt and marvelling at how vulnerable he looked - Hideto hadn’t seen something like that in so long. Everyone he knew always had their guards up. It was a refreshing change.

Soon, he left Gackt to sleep peacefully, grabbing another pillow from the bed and a blanket from his wardrobe. He curled up on the couch in the living room, feeling a peace that he hadn’t been able to feel in the presence of another in a long time. He knew that there was someone else in this apartment. He knew that someone was around. And, usually, such thoughts would keep him from relaxing.

But tonight, they just seemed to bring him comfort and security.

Hideto closed his eyes and was soon asleep.

Notes: I think I’m moving too fast with how Hideto’s feeling towards Gackt. I don’t want this to end up like Thin Line so, thoughts?
