Chie sat down, and he slid her chair in under the table before circling around, taking the opposite seat. It was strange, seeing his friend dressed up in an outfit he had never seen before - hell, he didn't know she had even owned any dresses, let alone a fancy green evening gown. Who knew she could actually look so... cute? Surprised by his own thoughts, Yosuke busied himself with unwrapping the silverware on the table, placing the napkin on his lap and looking anywhere but at her.
“Wow, this place is really fancy! I never thought you would actually take me to a place like this,” Chie said as she gazed around the room. Seeing so many older women in fancy dresses made her feel out of place, like a duck among doves.
“Hey, you're the one who demanded it!” Yosuke replied, without the fervor he would have normally given. He knew what was coming next, and had already taken to looking at the menu.
“Well of course I demanded it! You spilled soda on my signed - my signed photo of Jackie Chan!”
“I thought Bruce Lee was your favorite?” Yosuke flipped the menu page idly, not even bothering to look at her.
“Oh, and I suppose you're just going to raise him from the dead to get me a signed photo?! Or are you going to get me another one of Jackie Chan? Be glad all I asked for was a dinner and not your kidney! And look at me when I'm talking to you!” Chie tried her best to keep her voice down even as she ranted, and added a subtle kick underneath the table.
“OW!” Yosuke's voice was not so subtle, and he quickly hunched over and hid himself in his menu. The other patrons were looking, and the last thing he needed was to get kicked out for being the kid making a scene in a fancy restaurant. The waiter came before long. Yosuke rolled her eyes as she ordered the steak, which earned him another kick; he managed to keep his mouth shut that time. Chie hardly seemed to notice when he ordered the fish, her eyes were already skimming the dessert menu.
They ate in an awkward silence, focusing on their food intently, both seeming determined not to look at the other. Their attire, the atmosphere, the older couples around them - everything about the rester aunt told them they were on a date, a possibility neither one had really considered at the start of the night, a possibility which pushed them into new and unfamiliar territory. When they finished eating and dessert hadn't come, they were left with few choices.
“I-I didn't even know there was a place like this in town. How'd you find it?” Chie asked, finally breaking the silence that had grown between them.
“Well of course you wouldn't know, you only eat at that Chinese place!” He smiled and laughed a little, trying to restore their normal banter. She was still looking down at her plate and playing with her dessert fork. He felt himself swallow hard. “Well, you know... I just looked around. I knew it had to be good, or...”
“... or?”
“Look, I already screwed up once! I just didn't want to go two for two.” Yosuke winced, waiting for the kick under the table. It never came - instead, he got a soft smile.
“Thanks.”
