Character Name: Zegram Ghart
Character Series: Rogue Galaxy
Character Age: 26
Address: 5725 Cunningham Lane
Background: Born and raised on the technologically advanced planet of Zerard, Zegram has never said much about his past, but as far as anyone can tell, it’s one of little consequence. All signs point to his upbringing being rather uneventful, but a strong case of wanderlust and an ever-present feeling of restlessness drove him to leave the safety of Zerard to travel the rest of the Wilherser System. Always one to favor trading blows rather than words during a disagreement, it was easy enough for him to fall into the profession of mercenary, offering his services and protection to travelers throughout the galaxy for a reasonable fee. He also found he could make a very respectable living out of bounty hunting, by traveling from planet to planet and taking down marks posted by the Galaxy Corporation on Zerard. He is fairly well-known throughout the Wilherser System for his monster hunting skills, as his name is almost always near the top of the ranks. His aim is to someday soon surpass the famous bounty hunter Desert Claw, but circumstances have caused him to set his bounty hunting career on the backburner for the time being.
Roughly two years ago, Zegram and his fiancée, Jane, were preparing to tour the Wilherser System together, after months of her trying to persuade him to bring her along the next time he made his rounds hunting. He relented, and just before they planned to depart from Zerard, he went to the Galaxy Corporation to update their travel visas while Jane waited outside with their luggage. A stray fiend, almost unheard of in that part of the city, had flown into the area and swooped to attack an elderly bystander. Jane threw herself in its path to push the old man out of the way, and Zegram emerged from the Galaxy Corp. building just in time to see Jane struck to the ground, killed by the impact of her head against the pavement.
Furious, Zegram returned to a solitary life of bounty hunting, until he was approached by Valkog, president of the Daytron Corporation, a weapons manufacturer. Being well-known as he was, word of Zegram’s loss had spread among those who were interested in the movements of the bounty hunter, and Valkog decided to take advantage of Zegram’s vulnerability. Valkog offered Zegram a chance for Jane to be a part of Daytron’s current bio-engineering project that utilized the powers of a substance called Rune to return life to those that had passed on, all in exchange for the hunter’s services. Though he was wary at first, Zegram accepted the offer and has been in the employ of Daytron ever since. His current task is to act as a mole aboard the pirate ship Dorgenark, under the command of Captain Dorgengoa, monitoring the crew’s actions as they search for the legendary treasure of Eden, much coveted by Valkog.
Personality: Zegram makes a show of being gruff and cynical. As a mercenary, he is very open about the fact that he only keeps certain company because he is being paid well for it, such as his time spent aboard the Dorgenark with the friendliest space pirates around. Despite his thorny personality, he is by no means quiet; he will seize any opportunity to voice his opinions about the abilities of others, or lack thereof. He is intelligent, cunning, and quick to act in most situations. He is largely untrustworthy, ignoring his conscience and following whoever will pay him the most or going wherever he might find the most personal gain. He sees himself as a “Lone Wolf,” so much so that he has been marked as “Zegram Ghart, the Lone Wolf” in places where bounty hunter ranks are posted throughout his home galaxy.
He was a much softer person once, and may be once again if he allows himself to heal. Though he has always been rough in manner and more than a little crass, he didn’t always shove people away as readily as he does now, but was a much kinder and more caring man. His fiancée, Jane, often called him out acting big and bad, but in truth he was easily blindsided and won over by kindness and enjoyed the company of others. He had a soft spot for people who could use his protection and was happy to give it to them, taking pleasure in his work as a mercenary and guard for hire instead of looking at solely as a way to make money. When Jane died, he was furious with himself for not being fast enough to save her in time, and angry at her for throwing herself in the path of danger as an act of kindness for a stranger.
He felt the loss acutely, and has since damned any sort of seemingly selfless act, often calling others out on being foolish do-gooders if given the opportunity. He sees kindness as a weakness, as well as friendship, and thus keeps himself fairly well isolated even when in the company of others. Friendship with the right person could change his mind, if the person were thick-skinned and persistent enough, but his grief and bad temper have both fuelled him to build his walls pretty high up.
Zegram makes a big deal about his loner status and will openly inform people that he doesn’t want, need, or appreciate their help. Though unwilling to form a close relationship with anyone since Jane’s death, be it romantic or otherwise, he’s taken to earning himself a reputation as a womanizer. He feels some guilt about it at times, knowing Jane wouldn’t have approved, but that doesn’t seem to be enough to make him curb his tongue. One such display took place during the Dorgenark crew’s unexpected trip to Juraika, where Zegram made a number of lewd comments when he and Jaster stumbled upon the warrior, Lilika, and her sister bathing in the spring as part of a purification rite. As seems to be the case with his prickly personality as a whole, Zegram is all talk when it comes to the womanizing - he makes a lot of crass comments and makes a big show of ogling, but never follows through, even when his attentions are reciprocated. He feels following through would dishonor Jane’s memory, and at the moment, she’s the only girl he’s truly interested in, with every intention of remaining faithful while he works to earn her a second chance at life. For all his insults, egotism and rudeness, Zegram really isn’t as bad a guy as he would like the rest of the world to believe, but prefers for people to see him as unapproachable. After all, if you never get close to anyone, you can’t get hurt.
Abilities: Claims to be fueled by alcohol, particularly pirate grog. Will report this time and time again with a straight face.
