Bernard couldn't remember much of his previous week.
He was in the shop, he knew that much... he was in the shop some more, reading the paper, sleeping at his desk... maybe he went to scavenge for something edible in the kitchen or a bit of a wine refill... and then - total blackout. Even worse than that one night he was kicked out of Gerald's place.
The last thing he remembered after that? Wandering back into the shop from the street.
Even though it looked to be the middle of the night, the front door was unlocked. Manny was pacing by the bookshelves in the back, and Fran was sitting opposite of Bernard's empty desk chair, staring off at nothing in particular while idly sipping at a bottle of her best mate's "finest" wine.
"What're you all doing here?" Bernard asked, his words slightly slurred. He ran a hand through his hair before ruffling it and making it even more messy (if that were possible).
"Bernard!" Fran was on him almost instantly, hugging him so tightly his smoker's lungs almost gave out on him. "Bernard where the hell have you been we were worried sick about you!"
"Where've I been?" Bernard asked, trying to unlatch her. But it was no use, she kept holding him like a mother does her child. "I just - I went for a walk."
"Bernard, you were gone practically a whole week!" Manny exclaimed. "It was like you just disappeared off the face of the planet!"
"You look absolutely horrible, Bernard," Fran said, letting go of him and looking him up and down. She began to fuss over his incredibly disheveled appearance. "Have you slept? Have you eaten? Did you get into any trouble we need to know about?"
Bernard shook his head slowly, feeling a headache coming on. "Can I just - sleep. That's what I need. Sleep." He plucked the wine bottle from Fran's hands before wandering over to the sofa and collapsing onto it.
Even if he could remember what had happened, it's not like they would believe one has the ability to walk straight from one dimension into the other, mingle with people and things from other dimensions, and then wander back like everything was fine and dandy.
