Summary: A few sleepless nights paled in comparison to what he had to protect.
The night had long fallen dead, its presence befalling them both as they laid together, both with eyes closed and chests rising and falling in harmony, their breaths deep and even.
Except Miroku was still awake, his mind active and alert despite his body’s need for rest.
It wasn’t that he didn’t want to sleep; he hadn’t rested well over the last couple of days, and falling into the abyss of unconsciousness was definitely at the top of his priority list. He had even actively tried to fall asleep, evening out his breathing deliberately as he closed his eyes and waited for the god of sleep to once again take his conscious brain away for the night.
But, whenever he got comfortable enough to fall off the edge, a sudden crippling fear would rip through him, causing him to wake and startle.
He couldn’t hear Inuyasha whenever he got comfortable. And the thought that he might have left or gotten hurt or was in danger was enough to yank him from the edge and put him on high alert once again.
Miroku knew the problem; after months of stolen kisses and heated exchanges, they’d finally done the deed a few nights back. He had been nervous; who wouldn’t be around Inuyasha, especially when you were the wrong gender? But Inuyasha had simply kissed his forehead and said, “If this is wrong, I don’t want to be right.” And Miroku had let him have his way with him, ravaging his body until there was no mistaking who he belonged to.
He gritted his teeth. And now…now that he knew what it felt like…he didn’t want to live without it again. Miroku brought a hand up and gently laid it down on Inuyasha’s splayed fingers, intertwining them carefully so he wouldn’t disrupt his sleep. If it meant a few sleepless nights to keep what he loved safe…then there was no sacrifice. He’d give the world to keep Inuyasha safe, even if he didn’t need it.
The thought echoed through his head as eventually, sleep did claim him once again. Though, to say sleep did it with a smile would be understating things just a little.
