I like how I end up in odd situations. It's definitely had an impact on my personality. Seriously.
I'm in Bowie, Maryland, living in the suburbs of DC. I hopped off the plan and onto the metro and got to the end of the blue line in less than an hour. My landlord was still at work but said she'd pick me up, so I waited at a near by mall until she came and just worked on the computer.
Soooo, I noticed as I'm hanging in the food court of this outdoor mall that I'm the only white girl. It didn't really phase me at first, but I definitely found it amusing. My landlord came to pick me up and within the first 10 minutes of the ride told me about the area and her life story. She immediately talked about how the area is 95% black and wanted to make sure I was okay with it (she's white, and their last intern was white and said she had a hard time adjusting). Her husband is black, and when he was 17 he moved to Germany where they met. He's worked for the military in communications, and relocated to the states 10 years ago. And she blabbed on about a lot more but didn't really sink it al in because she just talked so much.
My basement is sweet. I have a big room with two beds and a couch. The basement also has the HUGE tv and the gym. The house is a little tacky decoratoin wise, but nothing too horrible.
Uhhh, I might have some issues with their living styles. This family is not sustainable. They don't like to wash dishes, so they use styrofoam plates. They don't use the tap water or change the filter in the fridge water, so they buy bottled water. Uh. What? My summer goal is to slowly teach them that this is STUPID. I already got a start today by talking about my research, and made a joke about how being green is a fad and how it's mostly a marketing tactic... and described the energy saving solutions my professor and I came up with for the library project. It's start, we'll see where it goes.
Overall, I think I got super lucky living here. They consider me one of the family. This includes free food and rides to the bus stop. Totally going to be able to save money this summer. I also think this is going to be a good experience. I'm going to be the minority for once. I think that's pretty neat, considering the fact that I grew up in a white bubble.
Johnny has pretty much recovered from the flu, and is going to be visiting this Saturday! I'm can't wait.
Okay, work starts tomorrow and need to go to bed. Yikes!
