Day 4, around midnight
Hey,
Things are getting better, but are still rather shaky. One thing I need to get out of the habit of doing is nodding and responding as though I understand, when I don’t actually. I’m getting better at switching between Spanish and Italian, although I still have a ridiculous amount of difficulty with Spanish.
Today I went to Guest Services and worked with Rafid and Vale, mostly making reservations for dinner. That’s good, cos it’s something I can do with minimal problems. I hate telling the Spanish speakers that I speak Italian, though, cos I should be able to speak Spanish just fine. Ah, so much for Van Haze.
Vale and I went to Human Resources and I gave them my pictures and then a guy from HR delivered my badge thing to me. It’s not too much of a bad picture, so that’s fine. Barbara talked to me a lot and I, of course, nodded and said “va bene” every now and then. A little after I went back to the desk and Vale and I had been working, Vale asked me what Barbara had said I should do after lunch. I had no idea. Way to go, Naomi. You’re a confirmed idiot.
Anyway, I went back and asked what exactly it was that she wanted me to do, and she explained it all better. So, what it was was that I should eat lunch with Vale, come back and then, at 6pm, I should meet Jose Luis at the reception to greet new arrivals and put on bracelets and everything. Oh, I also got two Viva Wyndham shirts… yay… lol
I was sent to my room at 2:30pm to rest before I had to go down at 6pm, and then went to reception. It gets so so hot around the hotel, so it’s good that there are many many rest stops where one can get a drink. Anyway, tangent. When I got to the front desk, Jose Luis was already there, everyone had a bracelet, I had nothing to do and I was supposed to wear one of the shirts. Oops… Anyway, after Jose Luis abandoned me there, David at the front desk started hitting on me and it was funny in a kind of pathetic way… he was saying he’d be my “master” (tutor, lol) for Spanish and that he’s the best person to learn from, because he speaks Spanish perfectly. This went on for about half an hour and he’s probably twice my age or something. One of the woman at the desk was like, “Naomi… I’m sorry for you.” It was funny though, he talked incessantly and when a guest came up he’d stop mid-sentence and deal with him, then turn back to me and pick up right where he left off. I’ve been told by more than a handful of Dominicans that I look Dominican. Not hard, I suppose.
It is so hot here that one can do nothing less than shower twice a day. It’s a real pain to wear clothes, cos you’re sweating the entire time and almost dying. A guy today pointed out to me that Jamaica and the Dominican Rep. are in the same part of the Caribbean Sea, about the same distance from the Equator and so forth. Gee, thanks, I had no idea.
Tonight I washed my hair and I feel so much better now that it’s braided and I don’t have to deal with it being a nuisance on a daily ruddy basis. I went to dinner with Miriam and Barbara and then to “the Michael Jackson Show!” That was really funny. Some of it was really very good, but some parts were… well, inappropriate. I mean, children were in the audience and in the actual show, they shouldn’t have pretty much naked women gyrating all over every piece of furniture. It was… ick. But the parts with the group-dancing and all were really terrific. Afterwards, I had a coffee (they’re so tiny and cute, how can one resist?), and now I’m back here. I wish Mum or Daddy would call, cos I’m 1-bored, 2-lonesome.
Ah well, it’s 1am, I should get going. Sleep and then work tomorrow. I’ll listen to a few more songs, then get to sleep. I like that I have no problem whatsoever waking up at 6:30am. Well, between then and 7am.
Okay, I’m really going this time. I’m all tuckered out.
