with Harry, Adam and Sammie
Harry: *puts on kettle, knowing you'll get here soon*
Adam: *knocks on the door and pokes my head around* Hey, Harry. Hope I haven't kept you waiting. Jasmine stopped me on my way here.
Harry: *raises eyebrow* Oh? Did she have anything interesting to share? *notices Sammie sit up and take notice of one of her favoritest people
Adam: *grins as I notice Sammie* She was asking about Marie and stuff. Told me to be careful.
Harry: *slightly worried* that's not the first warning you've had, is it? *makes you a cuppa *
Adam: *shakes head* No. Dr. Andrews said the same thing. *bend down to pat Sammie, smiling when she tries to snuggle in closer* How's Sammie enjoying her visit? I heard you'd brought her in today.
Harry: *smiles* she was a bit nervous at first, but she seems to have settled down well. I thought I'd take her to paediatrics, as they're least likely to have a negative response. She doesn't like heart monitors much or ventilators, but I'm sure she can get used to them. I hope this will dispel some of the rumours going around. She's a good girl
Adam: The kids would love her, though gotta be careful as some kids aren't used to dogs and can get nervous. Take it slow with them. *sheepish* Sorry, Harry. You probably already know all this stuff.
Harry: I know, I'm just more worried about adults causing a fuss. I'll definitely take it slow, *grins* I'd rather you told me three times than that I forgot. It helps that she's smallish
Adam: She's good with people too *keeps patting her* Aren't you girl? You're a good girl.
Harry: *watches amused and hands you a few doggie treats* You're good with her too. you'd make a good dog-father *said straightfaced*
Adam: *feeds Sammie the treats, smiling as she eats them out of my hand* Thanks, Harry. Wanna get a dog later but not yet. Wanna see what happens first, get settled. Get into a practice or something
Harry: Are you sure you don't want to stay here? *grins* you can get practice in with Sammie then, if you want.
Adam: *shrugs* No sure, Harry. Kinda thinking I'd like to try something a bit rural, GP or something. Thought about peds but not sure now. *sheepish* Tend to react to some stuff because of my history, gotta lot to work through.
Harry: *walks back to the desk and sits down*. I think one of the things you need to ask yourself is are you going to let what happened control you, or are you going to follow your inclinations. I understand what you're saying but don't shy away from working with children if that's what you want to do. You'd be good with them. Of course, if you want to talk about any problems you have, I'm always here to listen
Adam: Thanks, Harry. *shrugs* See what happens at the time. *reluctantly pulls myself away from Sammie* *sits down* Yeah, know you are, and I appreciate it. Thanks.
Harry: *hands you tea and biscuits*. No chocolate for Sammie, mind you. Your welcome. Whenever you want.
Adam: *nods* *takes the tea and helps myself to a biscuit*
Harry: *offers by way of explanation* chocolate, raisins and grapes are bad for dogs.
Adam: Yeah, I know. Was gonna say something but figured as you weren't giving it to her that you knew. Had a dog as a kid *wistful* Still miss her some days.
Harry: Good point. you had a dog. Sorry, I'll stop telling you the obvious then
*smiles* I'm sure you do. I sometimes miss Yeller. Sammie makes up for it though. She's been very good about keeping me company, haven't you old girl? *ruffles Sammie's fur*
Adam: I expect you're both pleased to be home.
Harry: *smiles* yes, I think we are. Its...I'm getting too old for this kind of madness. Thank you for looking after Sammie. I would have been worried with anyone else.
Adam: Still feeling tired? *frowns* Any other symptoms? And it was our pleasure, Harry. Enjoyed having her visit
Harry: *smiles* I'm not twenty-something any more. She seems to have taken a shine to both of you as well
Adam: We've taken a shine to her too. *looks at you* You didn't answer my question, Harry.
Harry: *takes a sip of tea*. I haven't been sleeping well. Sammie's been keeping me company though.
Adam: Any idea why? Want me to take a look at anything? All healed up properly from what happened? *frowns* Any more headaches, that kinda thing?
Harry: I suspect my subconscious isn't happy with me. Do you know those
situations where its the proverbial devil or the deep blue sea? It was one of those. I'll be better though, Doctor Newman, if you could prescribe me a lighter and more mobile cast? In any colour but hot pink would be appreciated?
Adam: *quietly* Yeah, know about those and I can do that for you. That cast must be a pain in the arse. I'm sure you're healed enough for a lighter one. *laughs* I'm sure I can find you another colour. *grins* Something not quite as bright.
Harry: *smiles* I'm sure I am too. Its just the underground that is a real nuisance. Well, that and the fact that some of the little girls in the park seem to think its a fashion accessory, as to the rest *waves hand* I suspect any headaches I've had have been purely due to lack of sleep.
Adam: Do you need to take something to help you sleep? If it's becoming a problem
Harry: How about white to suit the jacket? Or maybe black to go with my shoes?
Adam: Was thinking about basic black but that's kinda depressing. Could go for a more paler shade of pink so you don't disappoint the kids in the park. *pauses* You don't do evasive that well, Harry. Seen better. Married to a guy who's an expert so you're wasting your time trying it with me cause it won't work.
Harry: *smiles* I take it pointing out that we were supposed to be talking about work related issues won't work either?
Adam: Nope. *puts my cup down and folds my arms*
Harry: *sits back* *quietly* Sorry Adam. I'm far more used to being on the other side of this discussion.
Adam: Yeah, so am I. *watches you for a moment* If you're not sleeping maybe you need to talk about stuff. Sometimes that helps.
Harry: Its not as much not sleeping as waking up. I guess my subconscious isn't very pleased with me. *looks at his cup*. I'm trying to figure out how much I can tell you without breaking the official secrets act. I keep dreaming I made one choice, but the other choice was equally unacceptable.
Adam: *shrugs* Whatever you say isn't gonna go further. *picks up my cup again, wraps my fingers around it* Sometimes what we think are choices aren't and whatever you do it won't make things right. *very quietly* Is the dream connected to what happened while you were away?
Harry: *shrugs* I know you wouldn't tell anyone. *nods*
Adam: Had dreams like that. Still do sometimes, but try to tell myself they aren't real. Doesn't always work though *pauses* does it?
Harry: I know that morally and ethically the choice I would have had to have make was the one I would have. I'm just not sure I would have been able to look myself in the mirror, ever again. No, it doesn't.*quietly* I still wake up thinking either one or the other are dead. *shudders*. Or worse.
Adam: *nods slowly* You do what you can at the time and hope like hell it's the best one. All you can do. *shakes my head* Watching someone you care about die is something that never leaves you. *looks up at you* *swallows* worse?
Harry: *nods* We got lucky. It didn't come to them acting on their threat, for various reasons, but it was a question of minutes. Its my job to save lives, not to take them. Not to have them die because of my actions, or inactions, whatever it may be.
Adam: *nods* *takes another sip of tea, not trusting myself to speak* *notices my hands are shaking, this is hitting a bit too close to home*
Harry: *sips tea*. I'm getting too old for this. I never remember things going this downhill. *goes to rub his temples but stops himself before he does*
Adam: *clears my throat as my voice is hoarse* Doesn't take much. Couple of minutes is enough to change everything.
Harry: *looks up and scrutinises you* I'm sorry, I didn't mean to upset you. Do you want to talk about it as well?
Adam: I'm fine. *shrugs* No, not really. Prefer not to think about it.
Harry: *slight smile*. I know the way that feels. If you want to talk though, I'm here.
Adam: Yeah, I know. *shrugs again* Appreciate the offer, but know what will happen if I do so I won't.
Harry: *nods* I can understand that. I take it you haven't had any contact from Marie? *knows its an obvious subject change but thinks we need it. Besides, doesn't want to talk about this further himself*
Adam: *shakes head* No, not yet.
Harry: Good. If you do remember, you don't have to listen to her in any way but anything you have if its witnessed or recorded can only help you
Adam: Yeah. Heard that theory before. Doesn't always work in practice.
Harry: I know. unfortunately, we can't predict if and when she will contact you. If at all
Adam: Just have to see what happens. *looks down* Review board was better than I thought. Wasn't sure I could handle anything that felt like a trial again.
Harry: *frowns* again? *mentally slaps himself for asking a silly question*
Adam: Yeah. *mumbles* Had to testify against Spenser when he went to prison
Harry: I'm sorry to hear that. Either way this should be the end of it, I hope, unless she cares to stir up trouble
Adam: *shrugs* Yeah. Wait and see I guess.
Harry: Is Saturday still alright for both of you?
Adam: Yeah. Thanks.
Harry: Are omlets alright with both of you? or would you prefer something more substantial?
Adam: *finishes my tea* Yeah, sounds great, Harry.
Harry: *softly* I'm sorry I upset you. *brightens* I was thinking of going over to paediatrics in a moment with Sammie. Do you want to come with me?
Adam: *swallows* Yeah, thanks. Sorry. Not your fault. Have some crap I don't deal with.
Harry: I'm sorry. I'll try not to bring it up again.
Adam: *shrugs* Don't worry about it. Need to deal with stuff, can't keep avoiding it. *gets up and puts my cup in the sink* Did you want me to write you up that cast before I go?
Harry: *nods* yes please.*wonders if you're going to be alright*. What time does your shift end
Adam: Soon.
Harry: Tell you what, why don't you help this poor patient get down to the plaster room and then leave hmm? This meeting is supposed to run till the end of your shift, and I know I'd like this thing changed. I won't tell if you won't tell.
Adam: *nods* Yeah, okay. *Pauses* Thanks.
Harry: your welcome. *in a more jovial tone* now write me that prescription, Doctor Newman, and get going.
Adam: *fishes in my pocket and pulls out paper and pen* *writes you out the script* Sorry, Harry. *looks at you, dropping the mask for a moment* Had a couple of things happen lately which have triggered some issues. Not dealing too great.
Harry: *quietly* I know I'm not Megabyte, but I can listen, if you need someone else to talk to. Work through them if you can though, they come back to bite. *wonders if you should be talking to a professional* Go on, go home. Your husband is probably waiting for you by now
Adam: Yeah, maybe. *shrugs* Already made an idiot of myself going to pieces on you, no offence Harry but know it would happen again and not prepared to do that to you. *hands you the script* Try to get some rest okay?
Harry: No, you've never made an idiot of yourself Adam. *takes script*. Take care alright?
Adam: Yeah, you too, Harry. *Pauses when I get to the door* Sorry. *walks out, thinking maybe next time I'll bring my stuff with me so I can port straight from your office*
