[btc] Making up with Sarah Jane

Nov 06, 2006 22:22

Sarah Jane came and visited me at hospital...and somehow I must have done something right....*shakes head in wonder*

Harry: *wonders why paperwork causes headaches and pours a fresh cup of coffee as well as grabing a sample packet of asperin*

Adam: *is walking down the corridor**notices someone familiar* *stops* Sarah Jane?

Sarah Jane: *turns at the voice* *frowns, placing the face and the name* Adam, isn't it? *notices the white coat, and puts two and two together* Excuse me, I didn't realise you worked here. *sheepishly* I'm looking for Harry's office. I don't suppose you could help me out?

Adam: *grins* Sure. It's a big place when you don't work here. Big place when you do too. I'm heading that way now, can take you if you want.

Sarah Jane: *smiles* Thank you, Adam. My apologies, I didn't realise you worked with Harry. *isn't sure how Harry will react seeing me because of terms on which we parted last time*

Adam: Not a problem. It's this way. *starts walking down the corridor* You were only a corridor out on the other side of one of the wards. *watches you carefully for a moment* Is he expecting you?

Sarah Jane: *shakes my head* I doubt it. *quietly follows you* *gives a smile to people who look up and smile as I walk past with you* *notices how people seem very friendly towards you* *can't help but grin when one of the nurses tells you to remind your husband she hasn't seen him in a while*

Adam: *reaches Harry's office* *Knocks and pokes my head in* You've got a visitor, Harry.

Harry: *looks up, glad for the break.* *is curious who it is* I do? Thank you Adam. *smiles at you*

Adam: I'll leave you to it. *quietly* Good luck, Harry. *opens the door to let Sarah Jane in*

Harry: *wonders why on earth he'd need good luck.* *Stands up when Sarah Jane comes in* Sarah! *gives her a visual once over, wondering why she's here and where she's hurt* What's wrong?

Sarah Jane: Does there need to be something wrong for me to visit you? *looks you up and down* *cringes when I see the cast on your leg, remembering* How are you? Broken leg aside.

Harry: I just...*shrugs* its a hospital *doesn't mention that's usually why people come to hospitals* *motions to the chair* Please, come in, sit down. Can I get you anything? The kettle just boiled. *smiles* I'm fine, the leg isn't even a bother any more.

Sarah Jane: *hesitates* A cup of tea would be nice, thank you. *sits down* *puts my bag down* I can leave if you'd prefer.

Harry: *Turns around to make a cup of tea, doctors it the way you like it* No, please stay. I've missed seeing you. *knows an I'm sorry won't cover it but doesn't know what else to say.* I'm sorry. I meant to talk to you afterwards.

Sarah Jane: *shrugs* I meant to talk to you as well, but things just moved so fast, I never got the chance.

Harry: *fishes around for the biscuits and puts the on a plate, hands both over*. I never meant to give you the impression I didn't care about you.
*moves a few reports carefully so I don't have to quite look at you* I do.

Sarah Jane: I know. *studies the floor* I do appreciate and know what you did for me back there, Harry. I don't want you to think I didn't. But I can take care of myself without you having to play knight on a white horse or whatever you think you need to. I'm not some damsel in distress

Harry: *quietly* I know you're quiet capable of looking after yourself. I've seen it more than once, after all. *shrugs*. I'm sorry. *reminds himself its better to have you as a friend in any capacity than not at all. Not to screw up again* It was my fault though that you were there. I....*takes a sip of coffee*. You wouldn't have been there if they hadn't have realised they could have used you against me.

Sarah Jane: No. I was there in the first place investigating a lead. Sometimes things just happen

Harry: *shakes his head* You may have been in the area, you may have even been in the compound, but they brought you into that cell because *goes to say 'were on my mind' but isn't sure if you've realised they are mind readers* of my actions. Otherwise you would have just been one of the crowd to them. You would have been safe. Well, safer.

Sarah Jane: *shakes my head* We don't know that for sure. It's over, Harry. Are you prepared to spend the rest of your life feeling gulty over it? I'd like to think I've moved past living for what ifs. I don't want to see you doing it. *softly* I do care for you, you are a good friend and have been for a long time.

Harry: *knows for himself for sure, and knows its why I've been having nightmares lately*.*isn't willing to have an argument with you over it*. I'm glad you're alright. *doesn't quite want to ask how travelling with the Doctor is, but feeling I should*. the Doctor was alright as well, I assume?

Sarah Jane: *looks at you blankly* The Doctor?

Harry: *nods* I didn't see him, but...*shrugs*

Sarah Jane: *realisation dawns* He wasn't there. I saw him a few months ago, first time in years. I said goodbye to him. I doubt I'll see him again. *shrugs* We have our own lives to lead.

Harry: He gave you k-9 and left? I thought you were with him....*realises I've assumed wrongly* *is frankly amazed, that you didn't go with him*. I thought that is what you wanted?

Sarah Jane: Yes. *shakes my head* *very slowly* Once it was, but I've spent too much time waiting for something I'm not sure I was ever meant to have. *shrugs* It's time to move on, Harry. I'm not wasting what time I have left. *shrugs again* Not that I've exactly wasted it anyway but you know..

Harry: *quietly* No, you definitely haven't wasted your time. *looks hopeful* Does that mean I'll get to see you a bit more often?

Sarah Jane: I haven't been a good friend, have I? I'm not sure what I can promise with work, Harry, but I'll try not to rush off again before I've fixed my mobile, okay?

Harry: You've stuck by me for twenty years. That's more than I can say of anybody else. I'd say you're entitled to the odd break. I'm not asking for any promises, just that if you've got nothing else to do you think of me? I've got a better idea, mobiles are getting a bit complex nowadays and if one part goes, well, I suspect another will go. It might be a better idea for you to have a new one.

Sarah Jane: I was looking into a new one. I think I've killed the other. *slight laugh* I'll think of you, Harry.

Harry: *nods* good. So how have you been, old girl?

Sarah Jane: *gives you a look* How many times have I told you not to call me that?

Harry: *ponders for a moment* One less times than I always do? *slightly more seriously* That doesn't negate the question though.

Sarah Jane: I'm fine, Harry. Just a bit tired, I guess, but then after what we've both been through that's to be expected. We're not the age we used to be, either of us.

Harry: *wry grin* I noticed. *gives you a look* have you been having trouble sleeping?

Sarah Jane: For the most part no. *quietly* I've seen things before and people dying, and aliens, but it never gets any easier to deal with.

Harry: *quietly* no, it doesn't. People dying, *waves hand* I'm used to, to some extent, but *shrugs* I can't say I've been sleeping soundly. Luckily Sammie helps.

Sarah Jane: *frowns* Sammie? *wonders if you have finally found someone*

Harry: *smiles and nods* Sammie. *takes one framed photo off my desk and hands it over.* She's a sweetheart.

Sarah Jane: *looks at the photo and smiles* She looks it. I would like to meet her one day.

Harry: *smiles* Maybe one day you will. I think she'd like you. Not sure what she'd think of K-9 though.

Sarah Jane: Or what K-9 might think of her. He is very curious about dogs for some reason.

Harry: I wonder if he sees familiarity in them, or another oddity? *shrugs* As long as K-9 doesn't think she's a threat I don't think there would be a problem. Though correct me if I'm wrong, but I don't remember K-9 being as assertive before?

Sarah Jane: This version seems to have more of a mind of his own, I've noticed. I suspect the Doctor is responsible but *shrugs* as I won't be seeing him to ask, who knows?

Harry: *hesitates for a moment, still a little bit in a state of disbelief that you're actually here and not off with him * I know this is a bit of a favour to ask, and I have no rights to right now, but can I ask you for a favour? Professionally, that is *hastens to add*

Sarah Jane: You can ask, but I can't promise anything. You know that. *sips my tea* What kind of favour? Are you in some kind of trouble, Harry?

Harry: *shakes his head* Why does everybody always think its me who gets into trouble? No, its not me. I need your word you won't tell anyone about this until we know for certain.

Sarah Jane: *nods* Of course.

Harry: We had a bit of an incident recently here at the hospital, involving a nurse and a patient. I don't know if there's been anything on your grapevine?

Sarah Jane: Can you be more specific? Those kinds of stories are more common than you would think, and there have been several variations of late.

Harry: *raises eyebrow* Not here I hope! This would involve hot
coffee being poured over the patient resulting in his injuries.

Sarah Jane: *grins* You know I can't reveal my sources or any potential leads until they have been thoroughly investigated. *more serious* That one I have heard of, but as it was attached to some rumour of a love triangle it sounded somewhat more tabloid than my editors would usually touch.

Harry: *snorts* I can assure you there is no love triangle involved. When was this from, approximately?

Sarah Jane: Last week. Some reporter over at the Recorder was digging around. *Shrugs* One of these youngsters who is convinced she is a great reporter but whose investigation skills are sadly lacking unfortunately. This job isn't about getting your name on the front page, it's about reporting the truth and making a difference.

Harry: *sighs* we're trying to keep this discreet, but I am a little concerned about what might happen now. As it is I'm a little concerned the nurse in question may be trying to stir up malcontent

Sarah Jane: *frowns* Off the record, okay? Does this involve someone you know?

Harry: Off the record, yes. *trusts sjs off the record implicitely*

Sarah Jane: Talk to me, Harry. I can't help you or your friend if I don't have the facts.

Harry: The nurse in question has apparently been seducing various members of staff. She tried it on my friend, and my friend respectfully declined, being married. She then tried to seduce my friend's spouse, who also declined, at which point she poured coffee over the spouse, resulting in first and second degree burns. The nurse has been suspended, but I'm worried she'll cause trouble.

Sarah Jane: *raises an eyebrow* Your friend and his /spouse/? *thoughtfully* This does sound like the same incident I had heard about. The spouses in question are both men?

Harry: *nods* they are.

Sarah Jane: Corrrect me if I'm wrong but would this have something to do with the young man who showed me where to find your office? Adam, isn't it?

Harry: *hesitates for a moment*. *nods* yes, Adam and Megabyte.

Sarah Jane: Would you like me to look into this further and see what I can find? I can also talk to the editor at the Recorder to make sure this doesn't go further until there are actual facts involved. We've known each other a while, I'm sure we can come to some kind of arrangement.

Harry: Yes please on the first, and if you could I know I'd apprecate it. I think they would as well. I can tell you with 100% certainty that there's no love triangle involved. That is pure and utter nonsense

Sarah Jane: *nods slowly* One thing that annoys me is stories that are printed for sensationalism with no thought for facts. I've seen innocent people hurt and lives ruined by self serving idiots. It's people like this that give my profession a bad name.

Harry: *quieter* they're both good men. I hate to see them demonised like this. *hesitates for a moment* I can't guarantee you any kind of story out of this, as I said, we're trying to keep this quiet. But I'd appreciate it as a personal favour

Sarah Jane: I only met them that once, and Adam again just now, but they were both very friendly and polite. *nods* Off the record, and if anyone asks we never had this conversation. *smiles* If they are friends of yours, Harry, that's a big point in their favour. I know you do not make friends lightly. *softly* It's not always about getting a story. If it was I wouldn't be in this business and you know it.

Harry: Thank you. *smiles* for some reason they seem to have taken me on as a sort of project, I think. They're a hard couple not to like, once you get to know them. I know you act with integrity, but I also know how your business works. You've had a few choice words about it now and again, remember? I know this is going to cost you a favour.

Sarah Jane: We've known each other a long time, Harry. A favour for a friend is the least I can do. *slight grin* I would like an opportunity to get to know these two properly one day though. I'm curious as to someone who has the staying power to take you on as a project. I know how stubborn you can be.

Harry: *nods* Thank you Sarah Jane. *grins* I'm sure we can set up a meeting some time. Perhaps you could come over for dinner some time soon? *hands over the biscuit plate* There are two of them and only one of me, and they are both stubborn too. I think they may have an edge on me there. Besides, they're younger and fitter. And they can work the beast *nods at pc* for more idea's if they need it. That way you could meet Sammie too.

Sarah Jane: I'd like that. I could even pick up pizza on the way, unless you're still making those omelets of yours? That is one thing I've never managed to get the knack of, making a good omelet.

Harry: *smiles* *softly* If you want an omlet I'm always happy to make those. *pulls out diary* So when is good for you?

Sarah Jane: How about this weekend? That will give me a chance to look into this problem for you as well and hopefully have some answers.

Harry: *checks to see if I'm free* looks like I don't have a shift this weekend. I'm reasonably certain Adam can make it but I'll check with him and Megabyte. How does four-ish sound?

Sarah Jane: Closer to five? Is that a problem? I have an appointment at two that has a tendency to run over.

Harry: no, that's no problem at all, whenever works for you. Say five oclock then? You still have a key to my place? I try and take Sammie out around four thirty to five, so if I'm not in make yourself at home?

Sarah Jane: *nods* Yes, I still have a key. Just make sure you have some decent coffee and I'll wait. That's not a problem. *glances at my watch* Speaking of appointments, I need to be somewhere in an hour, sorry.

Harry: *dryly* I'll rememer to stock up. *stands*. I'm glad you came by. Thank you.

Sarah Jane: *smiles* I should have come by sooner, but I know where to find you now. *hesitates* This isn't a problem for you, is it? Calling in on you at work? I know people talk in hospitals.

Harry: *snorts* The rest of the staff has decided that since I've started going home in the evenings for Sammie, I must have a partner or worse be involved in an illicit scheme. Don't worry. People will talk, regardless or not if its true. If they care to gossip about a friend coming to visit me, well, it keeps them happy and I really don't care much. Besides, *grins* if anyone causes any trouble I'll point out that this is also a professional discussion regarding the reputation of my intern and this hospital. *hobbles over to the door with you*
You're always welcome Sarah Jane. I don't care what anyone thinks.

Sarah Jane: *smiles* That's one of the things I've always admired about you, Harry. That you're true to yourself and don't worry about that kind of thing. *leans over and kisses you briefly on the cheek* Take care of yourself and that leg, and I'll see you on Saturday. *pauses* I'm getting a new mobile this week too, I'll let you know when I have it. Bye. *turns and walks out of the office*

Harry: *watches you go, then slowly raises my hand up to my cheek*. Take care Sarah Jane. *turns around and goes back into his office and proceeds to get absolutely nothing done for the rest of the afternoon*
