Fathers of Daughters

Toby is reminded that being a dad is much more difficult than it looks in the brochures, and that Elliot's pretty much faking it, too.
This is a brief bonus-piece to Someone Like You
http://drsquidlove.livejournal.com/56096.html. It will make sense without reading that story, but

It's funny, but you'd think that after all that he's been through up until now, this would be a walk in the park. Still, as awkward as this was for Toby, I think he handled it beautifully. This is precisely how I would have wanted/tried to handle it if I were a single dad with a daughter.
Kudos to Elliot for making Toby go talk to her about this... and not leaving when the house is swarming with teenage girls!
Thanks for writing this. It was what I needed to read to get back on track with my own story. Between traveling for the long weekend, stuff going on at work, and a few recent dates (***happy dance***), My Little Runaway got moved to a back burner for a bit. Even so, it's still moving forward and more twists lie ahead!

I don't know, plenty of guys seem to be delicate fainting flowers when it comes to periods. Of course, Elliot gets to be the mature, wise father, when he's not the one who has to do the talk. The SVU ep where he had to talk to Kathleen about whether she was sexually active was the most awkward thing in all his years in that show.
Glad you've got your groove going again. I don't have time to be writing anything for the next few months, so it's time for the rest of you to pick up the slack. :-D
Thanks sahem!

Thank you edub!
Yeah, I think we can be reasonably confident that no sexual creepers will be creeping in.. though also, those girls won't be able to sneak outside for a smoke tonight. Big, protective fathers are a double-edged sword.

I was a little nervous at first, because the end of SLY was so perfect, and I was afraid that this could change my impression of that. But I loved this slice-of-life look at their lives post-SLY. The awkward moments have progressed from serial-killer-ex-boyfriend comparisons and convicted-felon-and-addict revelations to facing a daughter's normal biological development. In the grand scheme of things, this should be no big deal!
But of course, it IS a big deal, because our Holly now has one more thing to deal with.
"I hate..." Her voice dropped so low, Toby barely heard, "blood."
And I suspect there is a very good reason for that. :((((
But I loved Elliot's initial reaction, and how he had to clue Toby in. He's not a detective for nothing! And bless him for going out to the store for supplies!
But this...

Oh yeah. Parental awkwardness is gender-blind. And Elliot gets to be supportive and wise, because he can duck out of the house when the hard conversation happens.

Thanks, sue!
I know how weird it is that this is the story that I needed to tell after all the rest of it, but so it goes. I think it was seeing a couple of things floating around on facebook about celebrating first periods. And I'm just a sucker for the domestic stuff.
