i finished watching season 7 of 24. it was better than my recollection of season 6, but still...oof. the upshot is that the sneaky bits are like watching games of metal gear solid, which is pretty dang cool. the downside is all the jingoist propaganda. every time they emphasize dead _americans_ it makes me cringe. i think you should have to do a shot every time they say "innocent". it has all the other usual stupidity, like a totally ridiculous presentation of what the white house decision making process is like...nothing new there. a change of pace for this season was the increase in rhetoric about whether or not the ends justify the means, and so despite the fact that there's just as much torture as previous seasons, at least you get the feeling they're not quite so cavalier about it. hmm hmm.
i never said, but like two months ago i finished reading use of weapons. ugh. that book took me forever to read because it was painfully boring. i dunno, does the culture series get better? because that one didn't leave me wanting to read anymore. :-/ i'm about halfway through feersum endjinn, which so far is better. the algebraist is still my favorite.
and also before christmas, i saw avatar. everyone who's going to has already seen it, but...i thought it was alright. the story was weak, as expected, but it was probably the best job that could have been done telling it. it reminded me a lot of aliens - simple characters, storytelling that doesn't waste any time getting down to it, heavy focus on the environment and conditions. i just wish that, even for how far they went with the scifi, that they'd gone a little bit further. i mean, it'd have been nice if the navi weren't just blue native americans. feather mohawks? was that really necessary?
last season of lost starts in a few days!!
