[Gumshoe happens to be walking Missile around town when he catches a whiff of the melting solder and notices a garage open. A garage open and filled with dismantled electronics while someone is at a table with his back to him.
He walks closer, taking a look around and then looks over the shoulder of the person at the bench to see what they're working on.]
Oh wow, pal, that looks way more complicated than a metal detector...
((OMG YAY GUMSHOE! I'm playing through Phoenix Wright Ace Attorney for the first time right now.))
[The man who approaches Egon in his garage makes him feel suddenly homesick. The guy reminds him of a good old New York City cop and he can't help but smile at him.]
That's because it's a ghost detector. Or it will be once I can figure out how to create a psychokinetic energy sensor using 1950's technology.
[Egon doesn't look amused. Of course, he's used to that sort of response but having his inventions and research compared to that of reality shows irks him in a particular way. He's especially reminded of that stupendously offensive show that Venkman used to host, World of the Psychic
( ... )
[Gumshoe notices the look he got and looks a little sheepish. And it doesn't help that it's followed by an advanced science lesson.]
Er, yeah, to be honest, those shows always did strike me as a little silly...
But that's really great you've got some concrete science for what you've done, huh? I take it you've gotten it to work back where you're from then, huh?
Oh, absolutely. My colleagues and I have been running a rather successful ghost-catching business for the past five years. We're about to branch into a franchise.
[He suddenly takes on an almost wild-eyed mad scientist look.]
And now I'm expanding my area of research. One of the subjects I'm currently looking into is inter-planar travel. I'm collecting data that could lead to the key to helping us escape Mayfield.
Oh wow, you really think that tear planer stuff will get us out of here? That'd be great!
And I bet lots of folks feel the same as well. Probably could find many who'd help with it and such. Heck, I'd offer to help, but I don't think there's much I could do since science isn't exactly my strength.

Psycho-what now? What kind of energy is that?
Wait, a ghost detector?! Really? Like the stuff you sometimes see on TV? Those reality show ones, I mean.
