Adrian was stalling. A lot, actually. He knew he'd have to get on the train eventually, but he didn't want to. Going to India for the summer was rapidly losing its attraction.

He was far more attracted to the man, standing alone next to a couple of bags and trunks. But he couldn't just go over there and do what he wanted. SAy goodbye like he wanted to.

The trunks were already loaded, and time was running out.

Finally it looked like most of the other students had said goodbye and whatnot, and Adrian pulled himself together. Waiting wouldn't change the fact that Simon most likely would be leaving just after the train did. And that he even more likely wouldn't come back. Ever.

"Do you remember the shrinking charm for all your stuff so you can get all of it home?" Adrian asked softly, stepping up behind Simon.

Simon's eyelids sank closed for a moment at the sound of that ... beloved... soft deep voice.

He turned with a smile. They'd said their goodbyes the previous night... in his bed. He didn't think he'd see the tall Slytherin again... ever.

"Yes... but I don't want to lose track of it that small." The truth was he desperately hoped it's size and weight would attract an Intergalactic Hogwarts Express. He'd set them there as if to declare to whatever travel magic brought him here, I'm here! I'm ready to go!

"Have a nice train ride... then you're off to India?"

Adrian's lips tugged up into an answering smile, although he didn't feel much like smiling at all.

It wasn't fair.

"Well ... yeah." He glanced over at the train, then back at Simon.

"It's where my home is now." He shrugged, pushing away thoughts of what had been his home up until only 6 months ago.

"I hope you have a nice ride too."

Exchanging niceties, ey? It wasn't as if they could do much more!

If only he'd know that Simon would be here next year. Of course, why by Merlin's beard would the man want to come back, when he could work at far more interesting places where he originally came from?

I'd promise to write... but I hope to not be able to from where I'm headed... 500 years into the future...

He looked up into Adrian's green eyes. He'd purposely resisted getting to know the boy too closely, refrained from sharing too many plans and dreams. They'd never had a future... but they'd had a great year...

Adrian should get on the train.
Simon should say farewell to the other students.
But he couldn't stop staring into the those green eyes.
And he couldn't stop his hand finding and lacing his fingers into the slightly bigger hand.

"I'll never forget you, Adrian," he said in a voice choked with sudden strong emotion.

Adrian didn't quite believe Simon. He was not that unforgettable, Adrian had no illusions in that respect. But it still felt good to hear Simon say it, like that, and held his hand.

It sucked. He was halfway tempted to ... tag along to where ever Simon was headed. Osiris most likely.

Keep dreaming, Adrian. What exactly would you do there? And why do you think that's even possible ... or wanted?

Adrian tightnened his fingers slightly around Simon's, but didn't give in to the temptation to touch more. "I won't forget you either." Something stabbed sharply into his gut. Or at least that's how it felt.

"I'll miss you. Take care ... out there, okay?" Gods, he was so pathetic, unable to keep his voice really calm.

Adrian's quavery voice tugged painfully at Simon's heartstrings.

He nodded, his voice having left him.

I'll never see him again... Why does it hurt so much?

Simon realized he was squeezing Adrian's hand too tight. "You'll need that for fencing," he finally managed to sputter as he loosened his grip.

Dumbly, Adrian looked down at his hand in Simon's for a moment, then back up into the man's eyes. He missed the almost too tight grip.

"Yeah," he muttered, unwilling to let go, even though he could hear the train getting ready to leave the station.

"So... Good bye then, I--" Adrian's name called out from one of the open windowns on the train, interupted him, and he looked over to see Bletchley staring quite openly at them.

"You need to get your arse in here. The train's leaving now!" Adrian's dorm mate gave them another 'look', then disappeared from the window again.

Adrian glared at Bletchley, but his eyes instantly warmed as he looked back at Simon.

"Uhm... I guess, that's it then..." And still he didn't let go.

Let the fuck go, Adrian. He's not staying and neither are you. Get over it already!

Finally he let go and took a step back, before he could convince himself that kissing Simon right here and now, would be a good idea.

Simon, about to give up and stand up on tiptoe to grab the kiss they both so desperately wanted... almost followed Adrian when the boy finally let go and stepped away.

"Fare thee well, Adrian. May ... whatever is good, watch over you."

Should he make one last stupid vain attempt to board the train?

No, he should just let Adrian go. They had no future together. Simon had no future on this planet.

"You too." Adrian flashed a quick smile at Simon. There was no point in lamenting this and feel bad. It was what it was, and no more.

He took another step back, but realised it would be a foolish idea to board the train backwards.

Yes, you're making a fool of yourself here, Adrian.

"Bye, Simon." He couldn't think of anything else to say. He wouldn't get on the train on time, if he started thinking too much. Or if he kept looking at Simon like this.

With that thought he turned away and swiftly boarded the train, just in time as it was. The door almost slammed shut after him and the loud whistle sounded. He'd just reached the window to look out, when the train jerked into motion. Trying to smile, he raised a hand in a small wave.

Simon stood there, watching, as the train began to move... taking his heart away with it.

Melodramatic are we? But that's how it felt. The pain in his chest suffocated Simon.

He raised a hand toward Adrian in the window and felt a tingle in his palm.

He stood there, watching ... until the train disappeared.

Adrian kept looking at Simon, who stood entirely alone on the platform, until a turn made it impossible. And even then he remained for a moment, just looked at the landscape rushing by ( ... )

The train was long gone and still Simon paced the length of the loading platform. At times he silently prayed for his train to come and take him away. At times he cursed loudly.

At times he wondered what he'd do with himself if he truly was trapped here on Earth That Was, 500 years in his own past, before the diaspora, before cancer drugs.

He knew Adrian intended to come back to Hogwarts next year, but after a summer in India, he might decide to attend school there.

Staying here, Simon's excellent credentials were useless. He had no resources, no support system, no traceable past. He glared accusingly across the lake at the dark forbidding castle.

And went back to pacing the platform.
