Dave and I finally got to meet "Wolfman" Mac Kelly last week. He posted a bulletin from his myspace at around midnight the night before, asking for "holiday shopper" extras to be in a commercial for American Pop on 9 Mile, a block west of Woodward in downtown Ferndale. He was downstairs (where antique furniture is apparently sold) for a while, getting his make-up applied by Bryan "Morgus Gravesly" Larsen. I bought a Beetlejuice refrigerator magnet & key-chain and an Alfred Hitchcock hard-cover collection of short stories. It was only two bucks and one of the stories was by Robert "Psycho" Bloch. What the hell? I support any business that is sponsoring Nightmare Sinema.
Mac finally made his way upstairs and stumbled through several takes (which provided the inspiration for a future YouTube video) until finally nailing all of his key shots for the spot. Mac's camera man tried to get a shot of him riding the vintage 1964 coin-operated horse in front of the store but the winds were blowing his "fur" right off his face. Afterward, "Wolfman" gave Dave and I a hearty handshake, his business card and an invitation to watch the crew film their 'Bride Of The Monster' sketches for the December 6th broadcast. We politely declined, as we were fucking starving and went over to Buffalo Wild Wings for dinner. One of the best things about this economy being in the dumps is virtually NO ONE going out to eat. Ordinarily, Wild Wings looks like the fucking New York Stock Exchange in the evenings...but that joint was dead when Dave and I walked in. We had a peaceful meal. Some classing boxing KOs were being projected on a screen directly in my line of sight and Dave recognized one of the waitresses from FHS. The recognition seemed mutual but neither one said hello to the other.
So, if you're awake at midnight and have absolutely nothing better to do on December 6th, tune into MyTV 20 Detroit for 'Nightmare Sinema' and you'll see Dave and I in the American Pop commercial...provided, of course, Mac's editor doesn't crop our faces out of every shot. Whether you enjoy the b-movie horror host format or not, they'll be showcasing 'Bride Of The Monster', which is worth the notice alone. 'Plan 9' gets so much attention but 'Bride' is my personal favorite Ed Wood disaster.
All goals of the business plan I carefully outlined after we became YouTube partners has been coming to fruition, much faster than I expected. When we were approved as partners a few months ago, our channel had 226 subscribers. As of 8pm this evening, we have 471. Last month, we accrued 2,900 page impressions (every time an ad-unit is displayed from our videos). THIS month...we topped off with 29,000! We now have over 120 videos running ad-units, have been getting some wonderful feedback and are on-track to earn over 60,000 page impressions by the end of December!
My dream of one day earning a living solely as a professional film maker is finally within grasp. It's all very surreal. And, it's all very fun...albeit time consuming:)
Thanksgiving was nice. I stuffed myself turgid, took an insulin coma-like nap and when I woke up, the most annoying or our relatives were leaving. Couldn't ask for more.
