Shizuo was already half awake because of the slight pain in his arm. It's been a while since he hurt and so he wondered whether someone had shot him again. Opening his eyes, he scowled as he saw the flea's face and threw a punch at him. Izaya of course avoided getting hit.

And also - that was weird - he felt his back hurt. Was Izaya's mattress so bad or what? It felt so good when he first laid there!
He groaned as he sat up. It was so strange, this pain... it was almost as if he was human again. The last time he'd felt like this was probably still when he was a child and he used to break his bones constantly. Yes, although back then it hurt more, now it felt similar in a sense.

“Shizuka decided to scratch you - oh what a lovely cat indeed - but somehow our souls are still connected and that means my arm is bleeding now too so I suggest we take this to the bathroom.”

“I knew that your cat would have the same habit as you do. Nothing good can come out when you're taking care of something,” Shizuo snorted in response.

Izaya's eyes widened and he grit his teeth at the obvious insult.

- and he slapped Shizuo.

Izaya immediately realized his mistake as he felt the stinging sensation on his cheek and his head turning by instinct.

As if he didn't know that already. As if he couldn't see all the things that were wrong with his sisters. As if he didn't realize it was his fault for being so twisted and leaving them. As if he didn't spend hours debating whether keeping a living being in the same area he occupied was a good idea. And why did this brute that invaded his life, no, that ruined his life, think, that he had any right to judge Izaya after everything Shizuo himself has done.

Izaya knew very well that his logic was flawed. But this was just so humiliating. How come a monster that beat up people for any stupid reason, that hated people on first sight, how come it deserved more love than Izaya did? How did he despite his inhuman strength and horrible temper have so many humans who adored him, flocking to him like sheep. Why was he the perfect brother/friend/lover?

It wasn't fair. All that Izaya was - a bother, a replacement for people. Why couldn't it be the other way?

And why did this idiot have to rub it in his face?

He hated that. Hated him. Abhorred him. Despised him. Detested him. Resented him. He was nothing but an abomination. A flaw in Izaya's plans. An error that should have never happened.

Ah, he did something stupid. Just because he didn't get any sleep and was in a stressful situation, everything hurt and ached and he was frustrated didn't mean he could let Shizuo get to him! Ah, who was he kidding... He totally just did.

As if Shizuo realized what just happened only now, he stared at the informant with wide eyes, holding a palm to his swollen cheek. It seemed that he felt pain just like any other human now that he was connected to one. Although he hated to admit that the flea was one of course.

But... did Izaya seriously just hit him? He'd never seen him lose temper before. In that way he was the exact opposite of Shizuo, calm and collected (although his teasing facade may be a bit misleading) - he always counted on his intelligence unlike Shizuo who depended solely on the power he possessed. He used weapons like knives to defend himself and connections to attack. He didn't act on impulse.

Until now, that is.
