Can I Keep It? [1/4] anonymous September 19 2011, 02:26:05 UTC
"That's so cute!"

Tsugaru's shoulders tensed. In the past twenty four hours, he recently learned that a squeal like that never meant any good. It started during a trip to the beach. While Tsugaru was soaking up the sun during a nap, Psyche trekked beyond the safety barrier of the beach waters and into the ocean. The blond man woke up to find Psyche doggy paddling back to the shore with a venomous fish in each hand. He proudly held out the colorful fish with sparkling magenta eyes and a smile to match.

"Can we keep them?"

It was after Tsugaru tossed the fish back into the ocean for Psyche's safety that his little lover decided that their household was in need of a pet.

"Hey Tsu-chan, why don't we have any pets?"

He didn't have an answer for Psyche at the time, at least not one that he wanted to admit. Tsugaru was still unnerved by the fact Psyche still wanted to share his life with Tsugaru. The blond man wasn't sure that he could raise a pet of any kind with his boyfriend. While he was normally a very calm individual, his anger kept him from owning a pet all throughout his childhood. There was no telling when one temper tantrum would be one notch above Too Much and endanger another living creature. Psyche was the first person who accepted Tsugaru even with his rare but extreme outbursts of violence; Tsugaru had no intention of ruining Psyche's opinion of him. But it was time, he mused, that they should be settling down with something more domestic and thus he agreed to take Psyche to the pet store the next day.

When it came to pets, Tsugaru fancied a useful breed of dog like a sheepdog or collie -- perhaps birds. The idea of raising lovebirds with Psyche was something Tsugaru found both relaxing and appealing. But on the way to the store Psyche piped that he wanted twin chinchillas or a wallaby. Nevermind that Tsugaru didn't even know the proper maintenance for the creature; he wasn't sure where to put a wallaby in their home. His boyfriend dragged him through the store past cages of alpacas, an aquarium of electric eels, and something resembling a monkey ferret and called a kinkajou. Tsugaru calmly suggested a different pet each and every time. It wasn't that he didn't love his boyfriend but Psyche...had some peculiar tastes.

"Why don't we look at the rabbits?" he suggested at the time and immediately regretted it. Tsugaru recognized that tight smile. Psyche always smiled like that whenever he was disappointed but wanted to please Tsugaru. Psyche nodded, grabbed his head, and chirped that they would have the cutest rabbit in the world.

Needless to say, they hadn't found their future pet amongst the rabbits. They'd searched every shelf in that pet store before leaving just as petless as when they entered. They were on their way home when Psyche let out that sound. Tsugaru winced. No doubt Psyche found a gutter rat or lizard climbing up the wall. Instead Psyche yanked his sleeve and pointed to a box full of stray kittens. "FREE," was written in black marker on the side of the box. Psyche whined while fawning over them, an endearing reaction for a usually ordinary sight.

"Tsu-chan, look at them all!"

Tsugaru kneeled beside his boyfriend at the little animals. Psyche was already tossing his hands madly amongst the kittens, trying desperately to pet, rub, or coo at each one at the same time. Sixteen sets of beady eyes looked up expectantly at Tsugaru.

"Eight... That's quite a lot," Tsugaru observed. He rubbed the most forward of the bunch behind the ear, a black cat with gray paws and a fluffy tail. His gaze slowly inched to Psyche and-- Oh no. He knew what that wibbling lip was about to beg.

"Tsu--"

"There are too many, Psyche."

"Please?"

"We can't," the blond man sighed. But a kitten was more conventional than a hedgehog or sugar glider... "Only one."

Psyche stared long and hard at the kittens, nearly crying. He could almost hear his lover's cry of how difficult it was to choose only one. "Hmmmmm...!"

The other male looked up to the sky. Clouds were beginning to gather. Ah. Perhaps there was a way to please Psyche and himself. "It will rain tonight. Let's take them home. We'll keep one and find the others homes."
