“SHHH-YOU FUCKING-” he hissed frantically, looking around.
I rolled my eyes. “Don’t ‘Shhh’ me, what’s the big deal?”
“Just because I’m telling you doesn’t mean it’s not going to be a secret!” he whispered back; then his face got a little redder. “F-for a while, at least.”
“Look,” I continued at a normal volume, “I’m happy for you. Seriously. But can we have this conversation at home? Especially because you’re being such a freak about it? And I mean that in the nicest way possible.” I started moving past him, but he caught my arm and pulled me back in front of him. “What, Shizuo?” I was starting to get a little annoyed.
He struggled with the words again. For someone who frequently throws objects at people that weigh hundreds of kilograms, it was kind of sad to see him losing a fight against some intangible concepts. He was giving me that look again, trying to will the information into my brain. Twin telepathy, I guess. It wasn’t working. I figured I’d have to try to guess what the dumbass was thinking. Goody.
Okay. It was embarrassing. It had to do with gay, and Izaya. And it couldn’t be discussed at home.
Well shit. Arranging the pieces like that made it painfully obvious. And put me in a pretty interesting position. I couldn’t help the curl of a smile that spread onto my face as I incredulously asked, “Are you asking me for help getting into his pants?”
His hands tightened painfully around my arms, but I ignored it, too amused to care about the bruises I was probably receiving. It took him another minute or so to robot through another one of those painful nods.
For once, I was at a bit of a loss for words. “Well, I can’t really do anything about it right now, unless you want me to go and kidnap him.”
Some positive emotion I couldn’t place manifested briefly in his eyes and I felt my face contort into an expression of complete disbelief.
“Please do not tell me that was your plan.”
Suddenly he found his tongue. “He hates me, Delic.” He had released my arms to make an appropriate gesture of desperation.
“Up until yesterday, the feeling was mutual!”
“That was yesterday!”
“Exactly!” Though most of the students had quickly escaped the school in the few minutes we had been standing there, a few lingered, and were starting to stare at our quickly elevating voices. It didn’t help that Shizuo looked so goddamn suspicious. “I would really like to continue this conversation at home,” I said quietly.
He exhaled shakily, having gotten all worked up by…well, hell if I knew. At this point it could have been any number of things. “Are you going to help me, or not?”
“Of course I will. Just…not now. I think you need some educating first.”
His face, which had faded back to its normal color over the last couple of minutes, flamed red again. I realized he had definitely misinterpreted my meaning. “Jesus, hold your horny, that’s not what I meant. That part comes later. I have some conditions.” I was actually making this all up on the spot, but I had a feeling conditions would become a necessity at some point. I started walking and the over-excited, over-sized puppy followed me eagerly. “Start at the beginning.” Sounded like a good place to start. The end certainly wasn’t working well for me.
“You know what happened at the beginning. You started it.”
“I can’t have seriously been the first person to suggest that.”
He shrugged. “You were.” I looked at him, and then did a double-take, as if seeing him a second time would affirm the words he had said. He suddenly looked a bit panicky. “Do a lot of people think that?”
I thought for a moment. “If they do, I don’t think they’d ever tell you. I guess I was the first because I’m not afraid you’ll beat me to a pulp. I’m actually not sure why I didn’t say it sooner.”
