Different author!anon here. GOING TO ATTEMPT THIS. Let's see if I'll actually finish it. orz So totally a WIP sitting on my harddrive that hopefully will NOT be collecting dust...

Some beginning notes:
- mainly drew two-part inspiration from chapter 124 from Nodame Cantabile, “It wasn’t anything special, yet it was something very special...”
- the title “Faust” has a heavier-than-intended connotation. Don’t worry, it won’t end angsty!

“I'll be your comrade true
And if to your liking I behave,
I'll be your servant, be your slave!”
-Faust, Johann Wolfgang von Goethe

-----
It’s not anything special, really. June nineteenth doesn’t mean anything at all. Even if it is the second June nineteenth he can spend with Mikado now that the boy’s moved to Ikebukuro. Even if it is the third June nineteenth that he doesn’t have to deal with blood in a while. Even if it is the fourth June nineteenth that he doesn’t (theoretically) have to spend alone.

Even if it is June nineteenth, and he turns seventeen today.

Not for the first time, he’s disappointed that he’s somehow ended up in a different class than Mikado, while Mikado and Anri-chan share class representative duties together in 2-A (again). It’s a bit unfair, considering that he’s Mikado’s buddy; he’s the one who spent years coaxing Mikado to move out from his hometown. As they’re in their second year, they have less and less time outside of school for each other, aside from the occasional weekend when they can breathe from the amount of work they have to finish.

The familiar bustling streets of Ikebukuro have never made him so lonely. It’s further depressing that Masaomi has friends in the city - but all of them are conspicuously missing when he really wants them with him, right now. Mikado and Anri-chan have things to attend to; something like the school festival coming up, but he doesn’t put it past them to go on some sort of pseudo-date under the pretence of school (after all, he’s the one who taught Mikado that trick). Kadota-san and his loyal subjects are off doing whatever...and Celty-san is probably juggling a few jobs.

He kicks at the cement pavement.

For all the entertainment life in Ikebukuro, Kida Masaomi feels oddly misplaced.

Short intro is short. orz I'll work more on this later. For now, HAPPY NEW YEAR!! \o/

It doesn’t seem like he’s been wandering for that long, but when Masaomi looks up at the sky from the nth window he’s peering into, the streetlights are already flickering on in sequence down the road. Masaomi loves the city at night; it’s like a different landscape once people get off work, sitting in the numerous izakaya that adorn the streets of Ikebukuro (and Russia Sushi, of course, if Simon’s constant advertising has any effect). Just for a moment, their worries would be left outside of the pub, and they can drink themselves drunk before facing reality again.

Sometimes, Kida wishes he can be like that.

He kicks at the pavement again. The teddy bear in the display window seems to be mocking him. Laugh all you want, you silly bear. No one’s taken you off the shelf yet.

“Shizuo,” Tom-san pauses to go through his mental checklist again. “I think we’re done for tonight, you’re welcome to leave if you have anything to do.”

The ex-bartender puts out his cigarette with his foot, the sole of his shoe scraping harshly against the cement. It’s one thing to look tough in front of other people - the people he needs to intimidate in order to bring about the correct response of paying back debts. Shizuo is aware of what smoking will do to him, and he’s promised Kasuka to cut down, unless his work calls for it. He’s not about to let his brother down.

He doesn’t have any particular plans, but... “I’ll see you tomorrow then, Tom-san,” Shizuo nods meekly in farewell. His senpai has a way of making him feel like a young boy all over again, although he is only a few years older.

“Good night, Shizuo, don’t lose anything tonight.” He means it in good humour, most likely about his temper. Tom-san has a small bit of sympathy for all the objects he throws, it seems.

The blond continues in the direction they come from, sauntering with a less menacing aura now that nothing immediate endangers him. He likes this job, helping Tom-san with debt collection; flexible hours mean he can do whatever he wants with his spare time.

“What-” He begins to snarl as he is conditioned to have this instinctive response. Hey wait. It’s that kid with the blond hair - what’s his name again? He used to lead the Yellow Scarves. But it doesn’t spark anything. The kid just looks familiar. Nonetheless, seeing the younger blond glaring at the window makes his brotherly nature flare up. “Kid, shouldn’t you be at home?”

He receives an eyeful of confusion first, then mirth and irony. “I think I’ve roamed the city enough to know when I should go home, Heiwajima-san.”

-----
Contrary to the warning Masaomi has given to Mikado when the latter first stepped foot in Ikebukuro, Heiwajima-san is in fact, kind of harmless - unless otherwise (rightly) provoked. Thinking back, he’s not really sure why; maybe it’s his subconscious ensuring the constant company of his best friend, to stow him away in the backstage so no one can steal Mikado away. Maybe. Not that it really worked.

“Trust me, Heiwajima-san,” Kida laughs even though the reason behind it is anything but funny. “Ikebukuro is my home.”

He can tell he’s not being believed. “Then, Heiwajima-san...would it put your mind more at ease if you stay with me for the rest of the night?”

Shizuo stares at him like he’s gone mad.

Masaomi returns to looking at the teddy bear. “It’s my birthday today, I guess it is a little lonely after all, just spending it by myself...” He sighs heavily, partly for theatrics, but also partly - secretly - hoping that Heiwajima-san will agree, because there’s a grain of truth in his words.

Shizuo doesn’t disappoint. “...Fine.” It’s not like he has anything else to attend to. Kasuka’s filming tonight anyway. And birthdays are pretty important. It’s not everyday you turn a year older.

“I could hug you for that, Heiwajima-san,” Masaomi beams, relief (if it can be called so) flooding his system.

“Whatever,” Shizuo grunts and waves his hand airily to hide his embarrassment.

“So what do you want to do?”

“Isn’t this your birthday?”

Masaomi shrugs. “I’m an easy-going guy, I don’t care.”

“...Well I guess for starters, you can tell me your name.”
